specialk Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I bought one of these several months ago, here:http://www.thestringcleaner.com/I use it when I remember to, but I can't say if I notice any benefits. Anyone else use one of these and notice anything one way or the other? I know it works cuz the pads show the dirt/oils, even though I wash my hands before playing. Dave, the owner. seemed like a nice guy in my dealings with him. Just curious.sk
murkat Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 when my strings get "dirty", if they last that long, I will encircle the string with a lightly damped cloth, damped with denatured alcohol, being careful not getting any on the finish. D/A cleans xlnt, no residue.
DaveH Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Nothing beats a fresh set of strings. With decent strings running $4 a set in bulk, it's not worth the hassle to me....why not just change them out?
Eric Weston Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 scotchbrite pads, the little green ones....really. Grab a new one from under the sink & hide it downstairs so it never gets used on pots & pans (GASP). Stick a corner under a string, wrap it around & pinch it against itself, pull up like you're gonna stretch the string a bit....scrub up & down the length of the string once or twice.....do the next string ect. I've had string sets last for 6 months on guitars that don't get played constantly( I haven't changed strings on my #1 for almost a month, but I only have 2 gigs on em). I've had the same little scrubbers for 5 yrs or more....never wore one out. Flame away but clean strings sound better. Personally, I prefer new strings also but, time & effort THEN cost are the issues for me I'm lazy during the week............weekends too.
specialk Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 And I'm just a fool for bright, shiny objects, Great scotchbrite tip, Eric. Sounds like exactly what this gizmo does for a lot less money.
bizzwriter Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Yeah -- I HATE changing strings! They've got to REALLY suck before I put new ones on. Scotchbrite pads here I come!
shredmeister Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Yeah what Eric said. I tried some string cleaning pads that f**ked up my maple fretboard on my PC1. Left a black residue.I wipe my strings every time after I am done playing.
Steve Haynie Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 The idea of the string cleaner is good. If it does not mess up anything it certainly is not a bad idea. I usually hit my strings with a polish cloth before closing the case.
