Lockbody Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 But can a"shredder" be something other than a shredder? When we first moved to quaint Graysville, a rural suburb of Birmingham, we went out to try the local steakhouse, Greene's. I chose "Greene's famous T'Bone" and my wife decided to get the fried porkchop. I warned her about getting something other than what the restaurant was known for on the first visit. Sure enough, it was covered in about a pound and a half of breading and fried within an inch of being inedible, while my steak was about as perfect as could be asked for at its' price. My point to all this is: is it worthwhile to try and make a Californian something it is not? Now that I have two humbucker equiped guitars again, I was thinking about doing something different with my Cali. I kinda miss having a single-coil/p90 equiped guitar so I was thinking about one of these: a Bill Lawrence L-490 in the bridge position with one of their single-coils (L-290S) in the neck. The L-490 has got that "hot single/P90 thing" going for it from what I've read on the internet. A sound I wouldn't mind having around again. I know I could go a Tallboy or split any humbucker, but normally, I'm not big on push-pull pots or mini switches, and to me, a split humbucker just doesn't have "that" sound. Plus, it'll hum. Anybody else done anything like this? What do you think about me doing this anyway? And if I don't like it, I can always put in into my Studio.
RobB Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 And if I don't like it, I can always put in into my Studio.Exactly. I say, "go for it", and type up a tone report. Sounds like a cool mod...
edgar_allan_poe Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 There are three I would recommend over that particular Lawrence. 1. Rio Bastard. I am not a fan of the Rios...but this pickup kicks ass. Great harmonics, and just a heapin' helpin' of good ole' P90 whoop ass. 2. Hauessel P90. Very different from the Rio, but an amazing pickup. Not as nasty as the Rio, but smooth as a baby's ass after its been freshly powdered. Harmonics galore, and the finest definition of any pickup I have ever heard. Both of the are amazing at what they do, but are *very* different. I prefer the Hauessel, but if I were going to do Rock only...I would do the Rio. BCR deals the Rios and our own JingleJungle deals the Hauessels. I have dealt with both of these guys on numerous occasions, and they are both pricks. 3. The finest pickup in all the land is the Shablotnik Pigpen P90. It is absolutely filthy nasty and screams like banshee being pimp slapped. Think Missippi Queen, My Heads in Mississippi, Europa, and Zero the Hero all rolled into one pickup, and that *might* get you close. Unfortunately, he has stopped winding as he had to have Tommy John surgery. His pickups have gone through the roof pricewise...some of his buckers have gone for $700 a set.
Lockbody Posted July 14, 2005 Author Posted July 14, 2005 Rob, Enabler!! Poe, I've never heard the Lawrence's before. Just wondering if you have. Ya, rock is about all I know. I'll take your word on the Rios. I had Muys in my Daytona, and while they weren't bad... Any opinion on the Fat Bastards? *Eeek!!! Just saw your edit* $700 a pair ???
Lockbody Posted July 14, 2005 Author Posted July 14, 2005 And remember, any of 'em would have to deal with the Floyd and the inherent tonal "qualities" it gives.
straightblues Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 I had Bill Lawerence pickups in my tele. They sound very modern and sort of processed as opposed to vintage. If you are doing higher gain stuff they would be alright but not for clean or on the verge of breakup stuff. I didn't care for them myself but many other people do.

I had Muys in my Daytona, and while they weren't bad...Any opinion on the Fat Bastards?Yes...I have heard that particular Lawrence. It was a good pickup, but not as good as the Rio or Hauessel IMHO. It was a little to harsh in the upper mids for my tastes. If R&R is your thing then the Fat Bastard will smoke...it doesn't clean up as well as the Bastard though.
Lockbody Posted July 14, 2005 Author Posted July 14, 2005 Good info straightblues, thanks. Thanks, poe.

Lockbody Posted July 15, 2005 Author Posted July 15, 2005 You should never,ever...butcher a Cali.....sell em to me :)...hehe I want this too. Reasons not to do it. Reasons why I should keep looking for a "out of stock" and "on order" Parallel Axis Stack PU to match the bridge. Damn hard to find, and one of the few pickups on SD's website that you can't hear and doesn't have a "tone chart". What do those things sound like anyway? I'll probably never sell this one. It's worth far more to me than I could ever get for it.
