t-51 wiring help please!

There are T-51 Hamer Schematics on this site via a link under "Guitars" off of the main page if that's not the schematic you have.

thanks all, that is the schematic I downloaded, but the values of the pots & cap are too small to read. The guitar has two 500k pots...that can't be right?

That's what Hamer typically uses, but you'd probably do fine with 250s

Hey Paul144,

Congratulation on your T-51, dude. Sorry to hear it's been modified. I got lucky when I got mine over a month ago and only had to do a setup & guitar cleaning.

The pots are supposed to be the Hamer 250k and check that the capacitor is the correct value like the diagram. Does it still have the original Seymour Duncan '54 neck & Broadcaster bridge pickups? If you can't see the values of the pots or capacitor, use a magnifying glass. Post a picture so we can see the guitar & the wiring. Maybe one of the guys can help you out with your dilemma.

The cap in there now reads .05 MFD +-10%

100VDC CDET

Its yellow, about 3/4 long cylinder shape.

As far as the guitar goes, its lightweight ash finished in a Mary Kay white. Someone routed a 3rd pickup under the pickguard for the Nashville thing..seller never disclosed that. I paid $455 on ebay, but I got the seller to refund me $200! So heres what it needs

Bridge Saddles (really could use some new lock screws, one is stripped)

Black pickguard

2 pots

Has the SD bridge pickup, the neck is some weird stack that I cannot figure out who makes it. The cover is black metal and has a sticker on the bottom that reads 1NJ, so it needs a Vintage '54 to bring it to original...

The first 6 frets are grooved pretty deep, but I think I can file & polish them out.

The neck has a few lacquer chips that can be repaired.

The body is actually in decent shape for 12 years old, considering what the rest of it went thru..

So I really need to only drop in around $100.

What color are the screws that hold the neck on? Mine are black, and the heads seem too big.

My problem was, I can read the values on my capacitor, I just CAN'T read the value on the schematic, its in 6 point type and blurred!

Is this the same as yours?

Hey Paul144, the .05 cap will do. You can experiment with just about everything in there and not do too much harm - other than inhaling too many solder fumes - so feel free to try different value pots & caps. I've got a little R/C network drawing around here somewhere that keeps most of your highs as you roll down the volume and smooths the taper of the pot as well. Although on that guitar you may not need it.

Hey guys,

Didn't someone sell off a T-51 recently with the Nashville mod? Is that the same guitar? I believe its previous owner is the guy from The Gear Page website. His screenname is Barefoot. I may be wrong. Barefoot posted on here looking for a screw to replace the stripped bridge screw. He has also mentioned that the neck pickup was changed as well. Hmm...

Hey Paul144,

Sorry to hear that the T-51 has hardware issues. I know you're going to fix everything up on her and restore it back to its stock setup. I don't mind doing mods on the guitar, but at least include the hardware to return it to stock. I'm glad you're making the effort to fix that guitar. White is a real pretty color with a black pickguard. The neck screws are chrome on my '97 T-51 and I don't know any information on the bridge saddle adjustment screws. I posted on here and didn't get the information I needed. Some pictures of my '97 T-51 for comparison:

Sounds like the capacitor is the original one for the guitar. The neck attachment screws on mine are chrome and I believe that is the stock finish for T-51 neck attacment screws, black sounds like a "whatever is in the parts bin" mod. Even with all the relatively minor issues, with the $200 refund the seller gave you, I think you got a pretty decent deal on your T-51.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I made a little set screw for the one bad bridge saddle by clipping a small slotted screw to size. Seems to work fine.

Should I go with the original Duncan '54 neck pickup, or is there something better?

I ground & polished all the frets yesterday and they look brand new. I'm gonna have to hit the sides of the neck where they meet the fingerboard with some nitro touch up lacquer, since some has flaked & worn to the wood.

Damnit...I want to play this guitar already...but it was soooo bad when I got it, I started rippin' into it.

I'll place an order with Stew mac for a can, pots & neck screws today. The pickguard will take 2-5 weeks to make from Chandlerguitars.com...that sucks. It came with a gold aluminum guard, which I may paint for now...

update for anyone who is still interested...

ordered replacement 250k pots, chrome neck screws, a Duncan Antiquity neck pickup (after reading one exhausting review after another), and a can of clear nitro spray.

I took the gold aluminum pickguard and refinished it black, using Krylon and some wet sandpaper. Looks just like a bakelite one from a foot away. That should hold me until I find an original one.

Cleaned the bridge & saddles, and made a new set screw for the stripped one.

Just waiting for the parts to arrive. I'll do a partial refin on the neck sides and then it should be ready to go!

Hey Paul144,

Post some digital pictures when you finish your restoration on the T-51 guitar.

It came modded , so I bought an extra pickguard to restore it (a project for this winter, I guess)

But I am sure there are some one this board willing to help you out on another pickguard.
