bubs_42 Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Makes your EL34, 6v6 amps (Among Others) into EL 84 amp. They have two sets for $50. They are GT's. They also had one set of El34 Gt's for $25.

backinit Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 I have 6L6s with are supposed to be interchangable with EL34s so I think they would work for me. Would I notice a huge difference?

kurtsstuff Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 I have 6L6s with are supposed to be interchangable with EL34s so I think they would work for me. Would I notice a huge difference?Tighter but less low end and alot more upper mids..more presence...

kurtsstuff Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Hmmmm....If you do the switch..make sure to check your bias. even if your amp has a switch to go from6L6 to EL34..Check it anyways and set accordingly. Most if not all amps are biased coldfrom the factory and many times with a simple bias adjustment..You can take what was once a cold, sterile, lifeless amp and turn it into a favorite..
bubs_42 Posted November 1, 2009 Author Posted November 1, 2009 I sold my Tremoverb that 6l6'd in it because I wanted to go to an EL34 amp and I didn't need the Wattage. I ended up with a Stiletto Ace and its a fantastic amp. I never tried the Tremoverb with the EL's but I wish I would have. So I would at least give it a shot!
backinit Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 I though about it, but I'm not sure they would do much for my crate.
bubs_42 Posted November 1, 2009 Author Posted November 1, 2009 I though about it, but I'm not sure they would do much for my crate. Just a better set of tubes does wonders for even a Crate. I replaced my EL34's and 12ax7's in my VFX and its sounds a tone better.
Thundernotes Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Keep in mind an EL34 takes a lot more heater current than a 6L6 - be sure the 6.3V winding of the transformer can take the additional load.
backinit Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 I decided to stay away. I need all the low end I can get with the speakers and cabinet I currently have.
Mike Lee Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 I tried the THD Yellowjacket octal-to-EL84 adapters years ago, and they sucked big time.I put them in my Vibro King and all they did was make it sound thinner, brighter, and smaller, without really lowering the volume. I put the 6L6's back in and returned the Yellowjackets.Amps are designed around the output tubes. If you want EL84's, get an amp designed for them.
