I thought the '57 Classics that were in my 335 sounded pretty good there.

looking for some affordable used p'ups and tuners to upgrade a 335 type

suggestions?

I installed SD Phat Cats on an Ibanez Artcore AS-83 (the es-335 look alike), pretty bright sounding guitar. Got a great tone with DR pure blues strings.

I thought the '57 Classics that were in my 335 sounded pretty good there.

I used to interact frequently with a small downtown Seattle store owned and run by real players (I bought 5 of my 6 main guitars plus my Top Hat amp there). They decided to try a raft of various humbuckers to see what really made the ES-335 do best what it's most famous for. They were authorized SD, Fralin, Gibson, and Rio dealers with an in-house service bench. Their conclusion: Gibson Classic '57s. They did this long after I had them put SD Jazz and '59 PUs in my Ibanez. I don't play it enough to warrant re-doing the pickups. Ironically, maybe I'd play it more if it had '57s in it. Anyway, if I were going to bring an Ibanez, Yamaha, or Tokai up to real 335 territory, I'd put in Classic '57s.

Just spent some quality time with a recent Trini Lopez & a JCM 800. The Trini had a pair of 57s in it. Smoooooooooth baby.

i'd try a phatcat in the neck; its my fave neck pup,

and sounded good in a newport, mahogany studio, & several duotones i've owned.

i don't like neck humbuckers, too muddy.
