Love those things. They've gotten pretty pricey in the last 2 years or so after being great bargains for the last 30. I should have jumped on any of the 200 or so I thought about buying over the years! :D

A lot of guitar prices have gone up in the past 10 years. Look at the price of a Geddy Lee Jazz bass these days. I think they've gone up $400 in the last year or 2.

One of the problems with Ric pricing is that places like MF, are only giving 10% off list. That's tough to swallow, when I've been spoiled, and am used to paying 30 to 40% off.

Not sure if you're willing to consider new. The local shop here in Louisville, Guitar Emporium, has a new one in stock:

I'm not sure what their asking price is, but I'm pretty sure it's more than 10% off list (I could be wrong, though). They're good and fair people to deal with. Give them a call, 502 459-4153.

I have no affiliation, just been shopping there for roughly 30 years.

CurryPowder,

Thanks for the tip, and I did call him. His price was better than MF, but the shipping put it right where MF would be, with their free shipping. If I was buying new, I'd have no problem with that. But I think I'm going to look around for a used one.

Funny that there a lot of used ones around, yet everybody wants the same price for them. Eventually, somebody who really wants to sell, will adjust the price.

MF was actually blowing out select RICs a couple of months ago. 330 6 strings were $999 and the 4003s were $1,399. It was (of course) a very limited "Friday Phone Deal", but a few guys on another forum I visit scooped up the deals.

I haven't seen many USED ones go that cheap in a while - at least ones that weren't considered "projects". Those things were $500-750 used forever, and now they seem to be a $1,600-$2k bass.

Chris -- I've not seen a used Ric bass in the $500 to $750 range in probably 15 + years. They are one of the few brands where used can fetch almost as much as new price, and sometimes even more than new. Trust me, I've sold a plain used Ric for more than a new one cost. That was when you had to wait forever to get one. But they are out there now, so I'd expect to pay several hundred less than new.

Chris,

If you buy anything used inquire whether the finish on the neck is soft. I had one for a while, and if I played it for any appreciable time, the the back of the neck would start getting sticky.

My understanding is that it was a known problem in certain years. I don't remember what year mine was.
