I leaned the Lydian Mode

I know. That's so stupid, I even laugh at myself. I'm actually familiar with modes and use a few different ones (on purpose, and on accident) once in a while. Anybody here have any favorite types of uses for it? I hope there are some jazz heads here - gotta love those guys. Once again, it's a bit of a stupid question but would just like to know some honest opinions - along with the flaming, too.

I'm in a Monday mood.

The Lydian will give you a nice, major II chord in a progression. Kind of nice. Also, it will give you a vii minor chord in a progression. Also, it will give you a nice, bV note in the major pentatonic scale.

Honestly, never work it in, just doesn't do anything for me. Kinda interested in the replies too.

I keep getting sucked into a Dorian do-loop.

Dorian is kind of the "go to" in jazz music. Many jazzers will go out of their way through a chord progression to stay in a dorian mode.

Now that everyone has the modes of the major scale in check, now on to the modes of the natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales!!! Go Lydian Dominant!!!

haha . . . .

dorian and lydian are the same thing - dorian being the related minor of lydian. Just as A minor is to C major, so is A dorian to C lydian.

I use lydian a lot, and even when I'm not, I'm cognizant of the effect of the secondary tonic on the 4th step (F in the key of C for example). Raise the fourth, and suddenly your only concerned with a single root tonic note, and you can then make up pretty much any chord progression you like.

everything opened up to me in music once I learned that from the Lydian mode, everything else comes forth. this was my professor in college who opened my eyes:

Can somebody reccomend a good "forum" or media for learning the different modes, and how to recognize them? It's way past time for me to get this stuff....I bought a "Guitar College" (by Rich Severson) course a few years ago, and it's text consists of "hand-written" photocopies. A really sloppy job... $250.00, and it just confused the heck outa me! -Bob-
