wyldbil Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us...Well, I'll make a couple of notes about this. I have been a Sparks fan for a LONG time. (Got "Indiscreet" in 1978) When the Darkness popped up and everyone was comparing Justin's voice to Freddy Mercury, Knucklehead McGuiness, or whoever else, my first thought was, "Hmmm... I think he sounds like Russell Mael from Sparks..."Well, isn't it interesting that he does a Sparks song (a GREAT Sparks song) as the leadoff to his solo outing...? Hmm...ANYWAY, I like JH's version of the song. He is in fine vocal form, but I don't care for the synthcentric instrumental arrangement. In that regard, I way prefer the original, or the remake Sparks did with Faith No More a few years back.Side note, my old band "Blitzkrieg" rehearsed a more metallic version of that song in 1980. For what it's worth...I hope JH has this out of his system and is ready to release a KICKASS second Darkness album.
Turdus Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 You know... I thought these guys faded into oblivion. Not hearing anything about them for the longest time, I found their web site. I was surprised to see the following in news section:"Elduave missed his big chance to play bass in the Darkness"LOL!
cmatthes Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 He didn't have the right mustache, apparently. That and he wouldn't wear the Pirate suit.
atquinn Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 I thought this song was ridiculously over the top until I listened to the original (thank you Napster!) and realized this was a tame, dignified remake . Wyldbil, Since I'm too lazy/busy to listen to ever Sparks album on Napster, what album would you recommend I listen to to get the full Sparks experience (TTABEFTBOU has got me interested). -Austin
elduave Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 He didn't have the right mustache, apparently. That and he wouldn't wear the Pirate suit. Oh I wore the suit, it just didn't fit.
belikerick Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 "Angst in my Pants" The BEST!!!!Can't believe there's someone here who like Sparks...
wyldbil Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Austin- BLR's choice of Angst In My Pants is an interesting one. I like that album, but it's past their salad days in my opinion. That "band" has evolved wildly through the years with every twist and turn. I personally like best their mid-70s quartet of albums:IndiscreetKimono My House (has TTABEFTBOU)PropagandaBig BeatAt this point in their career, they showed an almost Queenlike flair for OTT drama and variety and quirky songwriting. This era had a solid guitar-based sound and a real rock band "feel". The next album after Big Beat, Introducing Sparks is close, IMHO, to the other four. After that (about 1979) they did #1 Song In Heaven, a disco album produced by Giorgio Moroder. From the second-string Queen to synth-disco? I was badly disappointed!OK, I'll shut up now.
