Jimbilly Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I'm might go look at a cabinet locally that has these, how do y'all like them compared to say, Vintage 30s? I think I had a Rivera 412 a few years ago that had those but I'm not sure, I like that cabinet. -because one opinion from someone on the HFC is worth about 20 opinions anywhere else.
MCChris Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 If the amp you'll be running through them has lots of mids, it's a fine choice. 75s have scooped mids, whereas V30s have spiked (upper, I believe) mids.I wouldn't be in a hurry to run a Mesa through 75s, just like I wouldn't be in a hurry to run a Marshall through V30s.
whiskeyzulu Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I've mixed a 75 & V30 w/ (to my ears) very good results. YMMV
Jimbilly Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 Drat, I just missed a jcm800 4x12 with g12t-75s for $300. I was going to pair it with my jcm800 2204 head. Oh well, there will be more. It's easy to find the newer 1960 cabinets, but I like the idea of getting a near match for the age of my amp.

That's what I had in my Marshall cab. I've replaced with Jensen Neo. They sound great and are also very lightweight. I think the ebay price is around $120. That seems high to me. I think OEM cost is around $50 (if the manufacturer agrees only to use Jensen).
murkat Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 first off, I do not like V30's.My point of view~I have my original set of greenbacks ( 1973)in my old white cab. Love them.I have a great quad set set of 65's in another cab (1982 jcm). Love them.In the past, I never really cared for the 75's or 80's.But,for my rack stereo rig, with two avatar 2x12 cabs,i have them loaded with some very well broken in 75's. Love them.i like that "greenback" thang goin on thing.
Jimbilly Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 I just spent a few special moments with my 2204 into my 2x12 Ampeg cab with V-30s, it is pretty bright in the top end, but with the presence all the way down and mids and treble on about 2, - I can't say too much bad about it. But I can see where a speaker with a little less mid/upper-mid would work extremely well with this head.
Disturber Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I don't like them in open cabs. For closed cabs and Marshall crunch they can be alright. I think Celestion changed the design on these over the years. So I guess older might be more greenback like, but I dunno..My current fave is to mix a G12h-30 70 anniversary with the an 80's G12-65. That just smokes (weed) in an open cab.
Jimbilly Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 I'm looking for medium+ gain classic to heavier rock, standard tuning, closed back 4x12 'thump'.
flattop Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I.M.O. Vintage 30's are a much 'Warmer' sounding speaker than G12t75's.I found Greenbacks too 'Spikey' ,G12H30 too flat sounding.Vintage 30's are best out of current Celestion range and about double the volume of anyting else 100db sensitivity.
ZR Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 [quote -because one opinion from someone on the HFC is worth about 20 opinions anywhere else. That's what I've always felt too! I use both in a 2x12" Zinky closed back cab. Best of both worlds for me. When recording I can always close mic one speaker or the other so it also adds to the versatility. I believe both speakers compliment each other well, YMMV.
