I recently paid about $400, medium to jumbo wire, on my '82 Sunburst (no binding).

This for the Special?

I got quoted $300 for a Strat (no binding obviosly) with a rosewood 'board by a former Hamer employee working out of my local shop. I know this cat does fine work.

I paid $325 for the thing brand new ('83 "big headstock" Squier).

But, if it needs new frets, what'cha gonna do? I did ponder just ordering up a new Warmoth neck for a couple hundo, but they seem to need a good "dialing in" by a competent luthier as well to get max buttah action and playability, so that seemed silly too.

Maybe just order up some wire and take matters into your own hands? I mean, how hard can it be to hammer some wire into little slots in wood?!? (ducks).

how many times has it been leveled/crowned? usually frets can go through that a bunch of times before they actually NEED to be replaced.

Never been leveled/crowned... First five have nice grooves from almost 20 years of power chords.

Get the first five replaced and get a leveling and crowning. You might be able to get that done for around $250.

If the grooves are affecting the action and playability, then get the work done. Many guitars with heavily grooved frets play great and sound fine though.

Need to clarify-

This was a complete refret AND a Plek. Best $400 I ever spent...

see what they say. If you get it refretted, you might consider stainless steel frets. They hold up better to cowboy and power chords.
