Jerry L Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 Sad news for us southern rockers. The man who many of us knew as the voice of Molly Hatchet, pasted away last night. Danny Joe had a stroke a few years back and had been in and out of the hospital since. We'll miss you Danny!
RJoseph133 Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 Danny Joe was a good dude. He used to show up at various jam nights in Jacksonville, and he sang a couple songs (we didn't know any Hatchet, so Skynyrd, of course) with my band a few times. Very unpretentious guy. If memory serves me right, he had diabetes pretty bad and didn't drink. He was a good guy to be friends with at a bar...he had arms like tree trunks.
Rockola Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 Bummer. I saw MH & AC/DC in 1979, incredible show. Not only did they rock hard, they looked like they could kick your ass. Now Dave Hlubek looks like he's a cheeseburger away from the emergency room. I did find some Hamer content.....Duane in 2002
Steve Haynie Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 Crap! I liked Molly Hatchet from day one. I saw them at least twice a year for three or four years. I finally got to meet DJB when he did his solo tour with Savoy Brown and Blackfoot. He was cool to me and my friends. All of the Molly Hatchet guys I got to talk with were cool back then. I heard Banner Thomas was the exception, but I never met him. This news about DJB is sort of expected from the little bits I've heard over the years, but it is still sad. Molly Hatchet and DJB were a big part of my junior high/high school years.
Jerry L Posted March 11, 2005 Author Posted March 11, 2005 Any idea what Duane is playing. I want to say a Diablo, but the pick guard make me think a Phantom ??? Dave Hlubek is back with Molly Hatchet but it looks like the playing a Fender now. He needs to step back into the light and start playing Hamers again. and yup, he's sporting a few extra pounds
hardheartedbill Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 DJB came to a few jam nights that I was in the host band for in Asheville NC, he was always so drunk it was hard to understand him, and we did exclusivly Allman Bros ( go figure ) w/ him , this was circa 92'ish
BTMN Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 Man, that makes me very sad cause I thought he had passed away already right after his stroke. There was a big jam then to raise money for him I will try to find the link.
diofan56 Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 That is a bummer! I remember hearing about a fundraiser concert for him. I have Danny's solo album but I have not played it for a long time. Will have to get it out again.I saw Molly Hatchet in Des Moines, Iowa at one of their Iowa Jam concerts. I believe it was in 1980. At that time they had that other vocalist but they were still quite good. If I remember the lineup correctly it was opening act Off Broadway, then the Babys, then Molly Hatchet, and the headliner was Journey.Davediofan56
BTMN Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 Dave I sat on the left speaker tower for that show. you must have been getting beers when Toto played It was Memorial Day Weekend 1980 I drove down for the show from Rochester, Mn. in a Blue "Starskey and Hutch" Torino. Only it was the luxury version Torino that just had the Cragers on it. Drove as fast as S&H's but didn't look as cool. My friend Clay drove. We had a blast. Jimmy Farrar was the singer. The Babys were cool that day too. I did an interview with them and they hated every second of it. I think they were almost done then. Johnathan Cane turned up in Journey not long after that.
rmahurin Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 I saw them in `78 in a full arena as an opening act for Kansas, then again in about `92 for free with Pat Travers in a bar parking lot in front of a hundred or so; Really good both times.
