bubs_42 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I'm moving forward on a project and I think the 59/Custom is going to be the pickup of choice. I'm just interested if anyone has tried one out.
bubs_42 Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 Hum, I haven't been digging the BB's lately. But i'm sure its been more of the guitars they are in than the pups. I didn't like the Dimarzio's 36's so that has me a little gun shy.
atquinn Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I'll definitely be trying one out at some point. The mismatching of the coils isn't just the number of winds (like something like Fralin Unbuckers), but the wire type is different as well. Which is weird, because I thought that Dimarzios had a patent/trademark that covered that exact sort of situation, but I guess not?-Austin
bubs_42 Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 Well i'm sure i'll just get one and try it out. I'm running a BroBucker, Custom 5, 59, PG, 78 (soon to be a Phatcat) and a JB in my guitars at the moment. It seems this would fill the gap.
Disturber Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Is it most common to use the A5 magnet from the 59 in these hybrids? Or does people go with the ceramic mag as well?My fav Duncan set now is the 1996 Ant paf´s in my Korina Standard that I loaded with fully charged mags. A2 in the neck and A5 in the bridge. One mag flipped for out of phase sounds.Try an Ant with an A5 mag, it sounds great. More bite & clarity, not so spongy and fuzzy when played through a cranked amp.
bubs_42 Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 I may have to try that. I really like the Seth in the bridge as well. Once I nail down a bridge i'll have to figure out the single coil next.
atquinn Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I don't generally don't like PAF-output pickups, but I wouldn't change anything about the Seth Lover bridge. What a great pickup! And I think most of the 59/Custom hybrids use Alnico 5, but I'm sure folks at the forum have tried everything out there. There's a pinned thread on the Seymour Duncan forum if anyone's really interested. I've done a fair amount of magnet swapping, but I've managed to avoid making hybrids so far.-Austin
KH Guitar Freak Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Hum, I haven't been digging the BB's lately. But i'm sure its been more of the guitars they are in than the pups. tbonesullivan Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 how exactly is it half a 59 and half a custom? does it have two different magnets? or is it just in the coils? I haven't been able to find a lot of specs on it.EDIT:Ok found them. Looks like it's an AlNiCo 5 bar magnet, with the custom slug coil, and the 59 screw coil. When it splits it goes to the slug coil for a good single coil apparently. So technically, it's more of a cross between the 59 and the Custom 5, which is the Duncan Custom with an AlNiCo 5 magnet. The Custom Custom has an A2 magnet.I've got a custom 5 in the newport, and I love it.
atquinn Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 That's correct. The "Custom" part of the hybrid refers to the wind, not the magnet; you can use any magnet you want if you DIY. Peeps on the Duncan forum have been making these, and other hybrids for years. It's a nice way to make some double-cream Duncan humbuckers as well.-Austin
