hamerhead Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 On guitars with 3 humbuckers or minis, what is the usual pickup combination - neck/neck/bridge or neck/bridge/bridge?
bubs_42 Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Neck, Neck, Bridge. Put a Phat Cat in the Middle!
hectorp Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 On a 3-pickup Eclipse that I had, the middle pot was wired to blend in the middle pickup (i.e., from the switch standpoint, it was always on). I have a gold top Studio with 3 humbuckers with the same wiring and it's actually really cool. I was never a fan of the middle pickup, but now I always play with the bridge on and the middle blended all the way on. As a chef might say, it 'crisps' up the tone...just like on our beloved 3-coils...
hamerhead Posted April 17, 2012 Author Posted April 17, 2012 I did a P90 Special with a push/pull blend pot. Greggy routed the center pickup hole and I ruined the rest. It did work really well, and if I'd known then what I know now, it would still be here. D'oh! But on this new one, if it can be done (and I don't know if it'll work this way), I want a 3-way switch wired: neck alone - middle/bridge together - bridge alone, with the 2nd volume controlling both middle and bridge. I might be too stupid to pull it off. Maybe one of the Jimmy Page 6-way toggles would be the way to go. Without giving away too much (it's a top-secret project. shhhhhhhh!!), it'll have 3 Firebird pickups (or possibly 2 Firebirds and a full-size bridge). Combining the center and bridge is the most important sound on this build. MegaMutantStrat, baby!
Armitage Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I have two Gibson Les Pauls and three Dean Cadillacs with three pickups, and on them it's: neck, middle and bridge, and bridge.
