Not too expensive though (beaters are ok).

Oh yeah, it needs to be a 4 string. I'm a guitar player. I'd be lost on a 5'er. Import Hamers might be ok as well.

Not a Hamer, but the Peavey 'Foundation' basses sound awesome and can be had cheap.

If'n yer still lookin', the Slammer Special short scale is a perfect cheapy/beater bass for recording. The pickups sound great. Selling like hotcakes, no complaints or returns.

Edited to add, I have a few G&L Tribute L2000's if that's your kinda thing. They use the same pickups as the US G&L's. The G&L buckers are my favorite bass pickups, ever.
