What do you think of the real Buck Dharma?

I just recently watched "A Long Day's Night" concert on one of the HD channels.

It refreshed my memory on just how killer these guys are. I've seen them three times and they were excellent every time. Once in the early 80's in Florida at the Tangirine bowl, when they used to have rock super bowl concerts. The other times were during and shortly after the Club ninja disc in Cali. Buck also did a cool instrumental for Guitar player or one of those magazines. He is a very talented musician, both playing and singing. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. He has great tone too and guess what kind of pickups he plays? Emg's Check out the latest DVD, the other guitarist is all classic Tele and his tone is not half as good as Buck's.

I grew up on "Some enchanted evening" which is also very good!

I saw several BOC shows in the seventies, usually in a "mind-altered" state, and Buck would walk slowly accross the stage, calmly chewing gum with a look on his face that had you believing his mind was on... "what's for lunch," or ," maybe I'll fix the lawnmower when I get home", all the while BURNING up a Les Paul. Some of the most ferocious licks ever! And as for Ace...listen to the solo on "Shock Me" from the album "Love Gun". SMOKIN' ! ! Maybe my all-time favorite rock solo. -Bob-

A lot of veteran rockers are still putting out great (original) stuff, but don't have a format to get it played/heard (and that supposedly even includes XM and Sirius). Whenever a discussion of bands/players in that pidgeonhole comes up, one of the first examples I cite is indeed BOC. Their more recent albums, HEAVEN FORBID, CURSE OF THE HIDDEN MIRROR, and the live A LONG DAY'S NIGHT (also a DVD) are superb...but who's heard 'em?

Roeser, has always epitomized speed AND chops; all too many players seem to have one but not the other. And he did finally admit, around the time COTHM was released, that he's finally gotten comfortable w/ BOC being referred to as a "classic rock band." My personal favorite BOC stuff has always been live material, particularly SOME ENCHANTED EVENING, with a killer cover of the Animals' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place".

Ditto on some Classic bands not getting on the radio today. Programers are balless sheep following the herd. Music does not count for much today. Hype and promotion are everything. That is why American Idiot is a huge TV hit and groups like BOC, Ted Nugent and Alice Cooper are stuck in a hard place. They have been releasing great new music that goes nowhere. Thank God for the tours. This is where they shine. You can't argue how good they are when they are up on stage and blow everyone else away. No tape loops or anything but in your face cranked up live music.

vastly under-rated, taste and technique, also a killer vocalist, people wish they could play like BD.

I totally agree. When i saw him live i thought his playing was on par with Eric Johnson. Great chops and an incredible sense of taste!

BOC was my first real concert (well, I'd seen the Ventures, but that was a club show). DR was inspiring to say the least, if not intimidating-he was GOOD. Shooting Star and Foghat were the openers. I think that the ticket was a whopping seven bucks.

Serial, did you get hit in the eyes with a laser during the solo from Don't Fear The Reaper? Did you see a weird floating eyeball in your rearview mirror afterwards? Did you drink peppermint schnapps?

Everyone go rent the movie "The Stoned Age". You'll thank me later.

Love BOC and Buck Dharma in particular!! Always liked his solos. "Don't Fear the Reaper", "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll", "R.U. Ready to Rock" & "Godzilla" (who else but BD could write a song about my favorite monster?), etc are great tunes.

And BTW Bill, "Burning for You" is not that bad of a song - I always turn it up when it's on the radio, don't you? :D
