Pickups in a Chaparral.... OBL's? Something else?

I'm beginning my pickup selection for a project guitar (Chap) and I'm wondering if I should pursue a set of the OBL's or if there's a better choice out there with similar design. I think I want humbuckers for the mid and neck positions. Not planning on a Sustainiac at this point.

What do you guys like?

I hear Murkat has a killer bridge pickup going..........

Got the PATB in mine, and it is a love/hate thing. Lacking balls. Twangy in fact. Been playing a sweet SS with a JB in the bridge and it kicks much ass. Go figure.

What kind of tone are you seeking?

One of the issues I always had with Set Neck Chap's is Hamer chose to place the bridge pickup very close to the bridge. My old short scale '86 had OBL's in it and I liked them. I think the 24.75" scale warmed up the guitar though. The XL500 in the bridge was very articulate with really good string separation. The tone was balanced but slightly slanted toward bright and chimy.

My old '87 set neck was 25.5" scale and much more snappy then the '86. The guitar was brighter and had a noticeably faster attack. The stock Hamer Slammer pickup measured at 12k and I didnt care for it in that guitar. It was very bright bordering on shrill. The weird thing about that guitar was it recorded very well but I hardly ever used it live. I ended up putting a Dimarzio Super 3 in the bridge position and that greatly improved it. With that pup the guitar had some bottom end and thick mids.

I sold both of these guitars to members here if they want to chime in on what they think they sound like... It's always so subjective...

Sorry to resurrect this thread a bit, but as an FYI, you can get pickups from Bill Lawrence at Wilde Pickups. I have a set of L500s waiting for some spare time that I just got recently from Bill and Becky.

I just dropped a Bill Lawrence 500XL in my 92 Cent's bridge position & it's the best pickup I had in it since I bought it (I tried a Dimebucker & a PATB-1 before). The stock S/Cs in it are fine (Slammers I suspect but don't quote me on that)...
