Single EVH in mahogany body?

In my ongoing quest to find a happy medium between getting an '80's hair metal/shredder tone and my love for Cali's, I'm contemplating chucking an EVH Frankenstein p'up in a Cali. Wondering how the combination of mahogany body and ebony board will interact with the EVH p'up.

Any thoughts from our resident p'up and tone experts?

NO problems, its not like that pickup is a huge mystery. Its a PAF! I've owned them and I've had them in a Sunburst and to me it could have used some more top end. Sounds like a great combo to me.

I would get a WCR MURKAT and call it a day. Murkat had plent of his guitars loaded with them for me to play while I was down in Nashville. They are some great pickups.

I hear ya Bubs. I put a WCR Murkat special in a chambered Les Paul axcess and it sounds markedly better than the Burstbucker that was in there. Lovely pinch harmonics and squeals. I'd go that route again but I have this EVH layin' around gathering dust and figured to use it.

14K isn't really in the PAF vein... more like a custom Custom Custom.

I can't see how it'd be a bad choice... A2 usually works well with mahogany/ebony combos.

So they did do the Frankenstien Pump in the Custom Custom Style. I was thinking they did it more long the lines of the 78 pickup. Anyhow even better.

On paper the EVH looks like a Custom Custom.

Please report back what you think of the EVH in that Cali. If it's not getting what you want I would try a DiMarzio Super Distortion...

Hopefully I'll be getting it back so I can try it out and report back. My local luthier does this as a side gig and is swamped with his primary job projects...
