morningstar Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I see a lot of jets that have thrust vectoring have a tail extension between the vanes. What's with that stinger? Anybody in aircraft engineering?thankeemorningstar
Bennyboy-UK Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I'm no expert, but a healthy enthusiast... Are you asking about thrust vectoring for missiles generally versus thrust vectoring for jets?I'll do some digging
morningstar Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 It sticks out between the cans. It is particualrly pronounced on MiG and Sukhoi which are pushing Generation 5 development. It is also flattened extension between the flattened cans on an F-22.I appreciate any input. (Yeah, OK I obsess over nerdy stuff). Cheers!Tommy
morningstar Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. This is a legitimate questiosn addressed to hopefully the aeronatical engineering or aviation fan crowd. i want to know why there is always a proboscis between the cans on a thurst vectored jet. No tin hats here thanks!morningstar
JGale Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Probiscus, Hybbiscus, it's all fun and games until someone has to wear a cone.
Hackubus Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Just kidding, I too would like to know the answer. Wanted to see how many feathers I could ruffle first.
JohnnyB Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-35'>this Wiki article about the Sukhoi Su's, The tail "stinger" houses the Phazotron N-012 rear facing radar for protection from attacks from behind. Here's a http://www.f-16.net/f-16_forum_viewtopic-t-8589.html'>discussion of the F-22 by enthusiasts. It may be that the F-22's little stinger houses a parachute and some antennae, and possibly does double duty on channeling the exhaust so it's not so easily detected by heat-seeking missiles.
JGale Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Johnny, Johnny, Johnny. You expects us to believe a radar called the "Phazotron 3000"?
