Storing Necks

What is the best way to store a spare bolt-on type neck?

Do you leave it the way it was when you pulled it off a body or should you loosen the truss rod?

If so, do you loosen it all the way or leave some tension on it?

In a video Dan Erlewine suggested putting tape over the screw holes to keep moisture out of the wood.

I always loosened them until the board is straight. That usually is pretty well slack, but i did have one neck that i had to leave some tension on, as it had a bow to it when the rod was all the way loose.

Not sure if that is the best thing to do, though. Interested to hear what the masters have to say.

Well, crazy uncle Jim used to smear grease on the rims and other chrome parts of the motorcycles he stuffed in his barn for years, decades on end. Not so crazy, eh? That's chrome that won't rust.

I'd stick the necks in a case with a humidifier to protect them from fluctuations.

Chrome does not rust, but if there are tiny pits rust can pop through over time. The grease coating was a good idea.

The grease is like with guns , they have cosmoline on them it's Ike hardened grease it won't rust I've un packed ak 47 s and Sks rifles ( back in the 1980 s ) that were stored for decades in that stuff it's a bitch to remove but it works good idea all , my bro in law has sensitive collectable s everything with him is 50% humidity 50 degrees f .
