Question

ok,

so my duo-tone output jacks(barrel type) are getting loose again, I replaced them once already @10yrs ago. I have a lunchtime show tomorrow, so I don't have time to order new ones for a permanent fix. So, am I missing something in the barrel jacks? is there a way to tighten the contacts?

I have plates and jacks for a "les paul" style mounting, but i'd have to drill out the holes to accomodate them(which i'd like to avoid) I'm not worried about resale, it's 20 yrs old, and my main guitar. I am just looking for a quick fix, even if temporary, to buy me some time to order new barrel jacks

My best suggestion would be to try and poke a small screwdriver up into the barrel and gently bend the parts that bear on the jack over a little to make a better contact.

Failing this take a plug off the end of a guitar lead and hard wire onto the output jacks solder terminals then make damn sure you don't tread on the lead by looping it over your strap..

"fingernail polish on the threads behind the inside nut"

misunderstanding, it's the contacts inside the barrel jack, not the barrel itself. Just worn out, at a most un-opportune time :(

Roll sandpaper into a tube that is thin enough to push into the jack and sand the contacts. This could get you through the gig.

I wish, it's not that the contacts are dirty, they are just loose on the inside. worn out, and not making contact with the cabe tips anymore.

but now they are gone, bored out the holes to 3/4 inch and put in standard switchcraft jacks(one normal and one TRS for the piezo side) and some metal square jack plates.

little stressfull to know I had to use it tomorrow when the guts are strewn across my bench :) but it all checks out!

Hope it works out. With the Duo Custom they went to jacks with about 37 fingers on each one to accomplish all the internal switching. Fortunately, they're open-frame types so they can be tweaked if you're brave/crazy. Still, it took a panicked call to Platzer one Saturday afternoon before a gig when one side went flaky.

I hate those barrel jacks. I did the same thing with a import duotone only I used the ElectroSocket tele cup jack. I'm sure what you did will work much better than the barrel jack.

Worked out just fine! I routed out the holes for the new jacks, the barrels only need @1/2 hole, now I have two 13/16ths holes and two fantastic switchcraft jacks. I would have done the ultrasocket, but I didn't have any(could do it in the future) and I'd have to drill a bigger hole than I have bits at this point. Only stumble was after I had put the gutz back in, I couldn't find one of my leads :) spent near 15min gettin' real nervous when I found it, it was sitting on a post and just looked like it was soldered on, sitting there laughing at my anxiety. Now it's fixed, and will be an easier fix(if it EVER needs it again) I really do hate those barrels, this is the second time I've had to change them out from them not making good contact.

NEVER AGAIN
