BTMN Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Read about this one today in USA Today.http://www.amazon.com/Rock-Star-Guitars-Lisa-Johnson/dp/0983270252/ref=pd_sim_b_1/180-3114334-4637521
Boomerang~Junkie Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Dammit. I'm over halfway through the Hamer guitar book and have been putting off reading it to make it last longer. So I went ahead and I ordered both of these - so I'll have something to fall back on once I finish it. Crap, all I need is another friggin' guitar related thing to buy - both of you enough already! OldSkoolRulz can review the first one and I'll review the second one which looks like its mostly pictures ! ! ! ! (Right up my alley).
Disturber Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Here is another cool book that seems to have some Hamer's in it. http://www.amazon.com/Star-Guitars-That-Rocked-World/dp/0760338213/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1381304964&sr=1-1&keywords=9780760338216

Serial, wtf since when did Steve give name to the worlds most famous Hamer 'Standard'??? Is it as hard to spell Standard as it is to spell Nielsen?

oldskoolrulz Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 So the book came in about a week ago, life's been a little hectic since then so i've spent very little time with it to form much of an opinion. but from what i've read (eric johnson's part) and just thumbing thru it a little it seems like a nicely laid out and thought out book. figured i'd post a few pics for you guys to check out, if you can get it for what i did ($37 shipped via amazon) i'd say it's definitely worth that and then some...
Boomerang~Junkie Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 A completely agree on the first one - Guitar Aficionado - it is a very nice book. I got mine last week too and the other (red one) Saturday - my work has been crazy - sorry for the delay. So, I'll throw my two cents worth in on each book. The first on has numerous guitars in it that I've never even heard of, much less seen - extremely cool. A handful of cool Hamers, about 250+ pages, thick medium gloss pages (plain black cover under the dust cover), it retails for $50.00. My only, single criticism is that the dust cover is in a matt finish, which is great for wedding invitations and other fu-fu type shit - not for dust covers on coffee table books - which this definitely is. The matt finish will (has already) quickly burnish into a sheen and scuffed an collected scuff marks like mad. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't friggin' white. Other than that, it is an awesome book so far - very straight forward and technical type photos with a blurb from the owner about it, in their own words. It runs each featured artists top guitars for several pages in a row - how cool is that?!?!? I'll be going through this book for a very long time. OldSkoolRulz is right, this is definitely worth the $37.00 spent. The red book, "108 Rock Star Guitars" is very nice too and retails for $108.00. This book is large. It is truly, a fully leather bound book and a first class production which smells a bit like an old ball glove. After a cursory fifteen minute look over, it is a bit more, "artsy-fartsy" styled with the photos (which was her goal). She's clearly trying to create "a mood" of sorts while catching the essence of each guitar, which she does well. Don't get me wrong here, these are really nice photos, but the if you are a traditionalist / purist who want the complete front back, sales brochure type photos to see the whole guitar - you won't find those type of photos in this book for each guitar - just some. The narrative portions are less than the other book and is written by the author - in her perspective - as it was relayed to her or based on her experience when she got to photograph each guitar. The pages on this behemoth of a book are thick and medium gloss and have a predominantly black background. It makes you feel like you're reading the Karma Sutra for guitars. One gripe here - on my copy of the book, the fancy gold crap they sprayed on the edge of the book, obviously seeped into the pages and glued half the damn pages together on the outer eight of an inch (yes, there are jokes aplenty that can apply here). A bit of a pain in the ass to get the pages apart and it has screwed up the very outer edge of some of the black pages with gold sparkles (they look like they were mugged by a pack of strippers wearing fresh glitter!). It comes with a separate, smaller "How this got started" sort of flier in the back of the book with a few pages of photos of concert tickets as well as a few pages of guitar picks and a guitar pick stuck to the inside of the back cover. Although its a different approach than the first, this is a very nice book that has about 390+ pages. Cautionary note here: this book is seriously heavy as a damn anvil - you must use two hands to pick it up or you'll wind up with a gimpy foot. Clearly worth the $65.00 when I bought it, but it appears to have jumped up to $81.00 now on Amazon - probably still worth it, but ultimately that's your call. In short, they are both - "great gets", but still not as good as our beloved Hamer book, so get cracking on book number two already would ya . . . I'll post some photos of it tomorrow night.
DBraz Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Thank you for this. Waiting until my copies arrive. In time for a bit of reading over the Christmas break hopefully?
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Interesting...I feel like Joe Bonamassa has a very unimaginative collection.I feel much better about my collection after seeing Neil Giraldo's (aside from the 1940's Martin) and Elliot Easton's. Is a 2007 Gibson LP really a collectible guitar? I guess it is cool that half of his collection are his own signature guitars, but that seems slightly less noteworthy than having a bunch 50s-era stratocasters. And although Mick Mars collection is somewhat unimaginative, I have to say it is interesting that he is more of a Strat guy than a Gibson guy. I would have thought he'd have a collection of vintage humbucker guitars based on how he made his name/living.
Boomerang~Junkie Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I'm sorry it took so long to get these photos posted. I hope they help.
