hamerhead Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Good to hear, Dave. I went with the low-end LPJ to see how they are, and maybe try a few things (contouring the body, rolling the fretboard, replacing the TOM with a Sustain Block....OK, maybe not.) It's a blank canvass. If it's good initially, I'll leave it. If not, under the knife it goes. It's not like I'm Kahlering a 4-digit.
PCollen Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 That guy has been doing that for years. He also goes by "gibsondependable" and at least one other eBay handle besides the stratosphere.I chatted with him a few years back after buying a few project parts from him. He said that people told him all the time he was crazy for doing what he does, but he insists that he has NEVER lost money on a guitar he parted out. Back then, he seemed willing to talk with me because I was one of the few people who wasn't a Gear Pager attacking him for the "immoral" practice of parting out a perfectly good guitar (cue J.Hiatt). I agree with him that there are tens of thousands of guitars out there for every one he sells in parts, so it's not like he's killing off a Black Rhino or a California Condor or something.reliable_fender ?? I've won a few pieces at auction from that one...a set of Fender SCN pickups (bid and won each separately...$109 total), a 2002 Am Std strat body ($150) , and a few other small items. Always great to deal with and never a problem.
PCollen Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I bought a mint Eric Johnson Signature Strat for just under 1K when they were going used for around $1,300 on ebay a few years back. It was one of the nicest Strats I've played... even acoustically. I parted it out and made 2-3 hundred after all the fees etc. I guess if you did that with many guitars at a time you could make some alright money.Which Gibsons are Pleked nowadays? If a guitar is Pleked then stripped of all parts does it still retain its Plek settings? As long as the neck, body, frets , nut, and perhaps truss rod adjustment are not messed with, I'd think YES. Seperate the neck from the guitar, and you're pleked. Plek with the pleking nut, and you're pleked.
diablo175 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I wonder if this guy sells YJM Strat carcasses? Love to get my hands on one of them and trick it out...
hamerhead Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I got the LPJ a couple days ago. It looks decent. I'll do a test fit/run with the pieces from my pile of parts, then decide what happens next. So far, it's looking good. Should be fun.
cmatthes Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I wonder if this guy sells YJM Strat carcasses? Love to get my hands on one of them and trick it out...He's had a few on there. There's another guy parting one out on there now too - saw it last week and again the other day...
