rugby1970 Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Specs on P90s that were used in the USA Specials? Probably SD's but any further info?
sixesandsevens Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 It's probably a SP90-2 in the neck and SP90-3 in the bridge. Many folks here find them too muddy and congested and prefer a lower-wind more vintage thing like Lollars or the Wolfetone mean/meaner set.I started out happy with the SDs, but I do wish they had a bit more definition sometimes, so I may try one of those others.
rugby1970 Posted April 5, 2014 Author Posted April 5, 2014 Just listened to clips on the SD site. Going to play on my main amp in a few.
tbonesullivan Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Yep, the Hot Soapbar in the neck, and Custom soapbar in the bridge. Unreal output levels, especially on the bridge. Sometimes hard to get a clean sound out of it, but if you are looking for that Leslie West /Mountain sound, you'll get it. Also great for Texas blues rock like ZZ top.I have two hamer USA specials, one with the stock pickups, and a second where I replaced the stock pickups with Fralins, so now I have a vintage sounding special, and a more modern sounding special.
tbonesullivan Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 I would have kept them in my special, if I didn't have two specials. One's cherry so I figured, it should be more "vintage" sounding. The other one is candy apple red with a thin "shredder" neck, so it's more for screaming hard rock. Nothing cuts through like the mix like the buzz saw sound of P-90s.
veatch Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 I dunno, they sound good to me.If it sounds good....
