HFC OS X Assistance Needed

Question

Posted

Since the upgrade yesterday, I continue to get the "currently unavailable" banner on my desktop. Using my laptop, my wife's desktop, or any of my iOS devices, the site is working fine.

It doesn't appear to be browser related, as it's the same in Safari, Firefox, and even Google Chrome which was only just loaded this morning as a test.

Aside from clearing all cache, history, and offline data in each browser, I've reset the DNS cache using the "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder" terminal command. I've tried all the combinations of command + shift + R + F5 + whatever to force a reload to fresh content.

I've tried typing in the site without the www as suggested in a few places online, and have even tried linking to content created on the HFC just this morning, so it feels deeper than a cache issue.

If it matters, I'm running 10.9.4.

Help!

eta: Not sure if it's related, but the tab label in each of the browsers reads "(OFFLINE) Community Manager"

Does everything else on the web work OK or is it just HFC? First, create a new user account and see if the problem follows to that account. If not, it's something messed up in your account. If it does, it's a system issue.

I would try to boot from the recovery partition (command R while starting up) and from the recovery partition run Disk Utility and repair permissions and the disk.

If it still is problem, try the Combo update (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1755?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as I've seen issues with the Delta updates.

If no joy there, reboot into the Recovery Partition and reinstall the OS from there. It will install a full new OS but leave your data intact.

Hope that helps,

Scott

I think it may be one of a couple things .

1. your isp has mutliple dns servers and one has the ip for the old site cached and you end up getting thtat once in a while. Should clear it self up and be gone for good shortly.

2. Your mac is holding it in its dns. This was a problem for me as well and ended up having to boot in to windows to get around it when doing work after migrating. You can flush internal dns on the mac by using the dnsflush cmd in terminal but you'll have to look that up as I dont remember the exact cmd off top of head.

Best of luck and hopes that its over soon.

I believe my account is fine as I'm able to log in elsewhere without issue.

I'm fairly certain it's a system issue as it happens logged in or logged out, across three browsers.

If it turns out I need to reload things, I'll be able to try that in a few weeks.

Does my ability to log on using different devices over the same wifi eliminate the possibility of #1? It's more a 100% thing than once in a while.

I'll read more on the DNS flush. My impression was the "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder" did that for Mavericks, but I'll double check.

eta: Just gave the terminal another try, starting with "dscacheutil -flushcache" and followed with "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder". No change.

Thanks all!

You could go to System Prefs > Network > Ethernet or Wifi (whichever you're on) >Advanced then click Renew DHCP lease.

Also, simply highlight which network interface you're using and delete it. Then, click Apply, Then, add it as new again.

Oh, and to flush the cache, use this command:

dscacheutil -flushcache

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Another thought would be to add a known DNS server, such as 8.8.8.8 in your network DNS settings.

I've tried all the above excluding reloading the OS and I've got nothing.

I'll try the reload in a few weeks if it doesn't PFM itself in the meantime.

I really appreciate all the suggestions.

I'm on 10.9.4 as well, and I couldn't get back in until early this morning. I believe in my case Ted's #1 response was the cause. Just keep trying in Safari and hopefully it'll let you back in.

Got it. Ted was right, then Scott was right, and finally specialk was right.

The way I was doing things wasn't deleting the old, only adding new. Once I deleted the old everything came up perfectly.

Oh, and SUPER FAST!! Thanks again Ted!
