veatch Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Looking for something pretty specific. Brand doesn't matter much, but i do want reasonable quality... * 500k * Log / Audio taper * Dual ganged (two pots, one shaft - i think there was a video on the interwebs about that a few years back...) * Push Pull switch (SPDT is all i need, but DPDT is fine...) * PCB mountable * ~12mm case is preferred, but i *think* i can sneak a 16mm in there. It'll be tight, though... The closest i've found so far is a Bourns, but PCB mounting might be a challenge... Thoughts? Tnx.
chromium Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Those Bourns pots at WD are the only ones I've noticed with both dual gang and push/pull switch.http://www.wdmusic.com/bourns_push_pull_pot_dpdt_a_taper_metric_knurled_shaft_500k_bourns_500pp.htmlTook a quick look at the following places that I frequent, but it doesn't look like they have anything close to that (nor a PCB mounted version):- SmallBear Electronics- Tayda- Futurelec- Banzai Music- Electronics Goldmine- Circuit Specialists- Antique Electronic SupplyYou might dig around on Mouser, Allied, Jameco, Newark, and DigiKey sites if you haven't already (...and even Ebay, Amazon for good measure).
veatch Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 Thanks - i've hit most of those places (you have a few i haven't seen before - thanks!) I've sent an email to Bourns to see if they have a PC Pin version of that pot, but no response yet. Odds are high i'll be reworking the design to fit the realities of component availability.
chromium Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Odds are high i'll be reworking the design to fit the realities of component availability. Not sure it'll be much help, but if you have the ability to separate the pot and switch functionality it'll open up more options... such as the PCB mounted 9mm Alphas. They offer a dual-gang version of those (SmallBear only stocks A100K, but you might be able to source 500s elsewhere): http://smallbear-electronics.mybigcommerce.com/alpha-dual-gang-9mm-pc-mount/ Those have a really tiny footprint, and they still feel a lot like the 16mm pots in operation. They might leave you enough space for a conventional PCB mounted toggle switch adjacent to the pot...
HAMERMAN Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Somebody could probably make what you want but in the potentiometer world this sort of thing is usually handled by custom runs with large minimum quantity orders. Given that I would say the one you posted looks like a good candidate. As far as PCB mountable with both dual gang and a push pull switch you wont find anything with all the pins in any sort of convenient arrangement anyway so I would say you are best of making a tiny PCB that connects to all of the pins (or at least the ones you need) and then brings them to one edge where a right angle header can connect them to the main PCB.http://www.robotroom.com/Joystick-Target-Power-Switch.htmlScroll down to "Vertical Mounting of a PCB Using Right-Angle Headers" to see what I mean.
veatch Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 That's a good idear, right there, sir. I can just solder all of the connections to a header and leave the pot panel mount. Thank you!

veatch Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Yup - that's that's the same one i have above - those are slug connections, not PC Pin. Bourns did get back to me - 1000 to 2000 pieces minimum. I think the header is the way to go. Thanks, all.
