tonedef Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 ...and I can see why you Hamer Nuts call this the best jazz bass Fender never made. It is as well built as anything else I own, including a Robin and a Koa neck-thru Carvin. I could not find anything to complain about, even if I wanted to be extremely critical. Well, maybe I'd like to see "CruiseBass" on the truss rod cover like on the old ones Built in '95, 8.5 lbs, balances very nicely, sounds like a jazz bass should, especially with the tone rolled off just a skinch, 4-string with a Gotoh bridge, beautiful green finish, great neck and volute, beautiful rosewood on the fretboard (instead of some of that really plain looking rosewood I've seen on so many other guitars), nice fretwork, quality hardware (some knock the tuners, but they seem fine to me and not worth complaining about. I'm not big on open-geared tuners, anyway), and a really nice scratch plate to top off the look. All-in-all, absolutely a great bass; one I doubt will be changing hands again anytime soon. Tonedef
Guest pirateflynn Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 Cool...........I must buy one someday soon!
Bass Guy Dave Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 ..and just wait until you get used to it! I would really like to have a Gotoh version someday. They make a great, classic sounding bass, while the 2TEK adds some uniqueness to the tone. Be preapred to drop jaws for a while. And by all means, share the love and post some pics if you've got 'em! Congratulations, and the downward spiral is just beginning. Best Wishes
kraut Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 Congratulations! I own a 95' Cruise too, with the 2tek-Bridge. Played through the Bassman it's soft, warm and deep, like a ......you name it...... Kraut
lonote049 Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 I knew you'd like it. I'll find that damned Bass Player review, I forgot about it!
tonedef Posted December 21, 2005 Author Posted December 21, 2005 I knew you'd like it. I'll find that damned Bass Player review, I forgot about it! Yup, Lonote, you are right, this is one fine bass. The more I play it, the more I like it. This could wind up being my fav bass, we'll see, but it is definitely going to get mucho playing time. Let me know when you find that review I'm glad I'm not the only one with a filing system so secret even I can't find it... Tonedef
Jimbilly Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Cruise basses are cool! here's mine below. I intend to try 'blocking' my 2tek someday just to see what happens. You should be able to place a tight fitting piece of wood behind the 2tek and get more of a conventional bridge sound out of it. As I imagine it, I could loosen the 2tek mounting screws and if the shim is the right size, tightening the screws would jam the shim in place. I really intend to do that to my 2tek equipped guitar, -it sounds a bit metallic.
tonedef Posted December 22, 2005 Author Posted December 22, 2005 J-B, are those EMG's? They did not come stock, did they? How do you like them?Tonedef
Jimbilly Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Yeah, the EMG's are stock. I think they were just a bit unusual, but not unheard of. I was told by my dealer that it was a Cruise Deluxe, and even though no-one else has ever heard of that designation, I'm sticking by it!

Is that a stacked knob at the bottom? Are those EMG's active? What else is different from a standard Cruise?Tonedef
cmatthes Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 I think those were standard on the 5 String models.Never heard nor seen anything called a "Cruise Deluxe"...!!I loves me them basses.

Thanks, I got so entranced in that 2Tek bridge I didn't even bother to count the strings I also am a little skeptical about the "Deluxe" thang--sounds like salesman hype... Cool bass, regardless Tonedef
Jimbilly Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 You guys are all wrong!!! Say it with me: DEE LUXXX! Yeah, probably salesman hype. They are active, and that stacked knob is bass and treble. I think they're good pickups, but not great, I'd rather have Bartolinis. I like the way the emg's in my Chap4 sound a lot better, oddly enough.
tonedef Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 Well...Jim-B, you're back! Thought that might get your attention... OK, Deeee-Luxxxe it is . Very cool five string, for sure. Tonedef
