Blog post on fingerboard care

Question

Posted

Hey guys, I just posted a new blog at my shop's website on guitar fingerboard care. You long-timers here will see it includes plenty of information that has been gleaned from fellow forumites over the years. I'd like to think of it as me taking many of "our" contributions and putting them in one essay. Enjoy!

There IS a difference between "Naphtha" and "VM&P Naphtha." "VM&P" stands for "Varnish Makers and Painters."  I believe one dries faster than the other.

Just did a Googling and checked out some forums in which the "versus" topic lit off flares, apparently the VM&P is the faster drying and the difference between the two is more of a legit concern if you're a pro painter.

Have you ever tried Fret Doctor?

I've had good results... A little experience and could only get it over the Internet.

Any opinions?

Heard of it, and good things, but never tried it. Someone will pipe in.

Thank you for the info, greatly appreciated.  I have been cleaning rosewood and ebony with 0000 steel wool, it sounds like I need to change that.  I've also been showing my 14 year old the little that I know and passing along poor techniques doesn't help him.

Hang on to the 0000 to take the tarnish'ey dull layer off frets that are overdue for TLC. A handful of swipes without hard elbow grease will do the trick. But mask the fretboard between the frets (abrasion protection) and mask the pickups (the wool threads/particles cling to their magnetism) first.
