New Speaker Incoming: Eminence Redcoat CV-75

I've been hearing a lot about these speakers, and saw some really nice demos for them, and I'm thinking of throwing one in my Rivera R Fifty-Five Twelve, which has a Rivera / Celestion G12T-85 in it. That speaker is a slightly beefier G12T-75, per Celestion's Dr Decibel, and the Rivera literature on it. It's also like a slightly different Classic Lead 80.   While I do like the clean tones I get, the overdrive just doesn't seem to make the speaker sing as much. Maybe it's the higher power, or maybe it's just the G12T-75 in it.

Either way, Listening to the CV-75, it sounds like it was worth a try, and at worse, I'll put it in a 1x12 that I have. I've also got a Mesa-Spec Vintage 30 to try out.

I also finally got the materials to make an extension cable for speakers, so I can try out the speakers in my combos with other combos / heads more easily. Definitely helps save space.

I noticed the cabinet was an Earcandy Sov. Great single 12 cabinet. I’ve been using one for almost 20 years. The Redcoat sounded good in it, I have 2 Boogie open backs and the comparison between cab’s w the same speaker is the Sov kicks you in the chest and the Boogies are less directional and not as loud and punchy. The CV-75 looks like a good choice.

Honestly, I'm always torn between open and closed back speaker enclosures. For playing at home, the open backs just sound better, as they are much less directional. I'm not into the "thump" that sucks the air out of your lungs.  I also have a thing for combos. Always have.

I made the switch from open backs to closed back more directional cabinets in the 80’s when PA systems improved and stage volume became an issue. I cloned the JBL monitor cabinets we used for vocal monitors, loaded them with guitar speakers, the other guitar player and I learned to use them firing at us, from the front of the stage, standing over them for feedback effect etc. this cut the guitars completely out of the vocal mikes and gave the FOH person a better grip on the mix. We could run our amps really hot and loud like we liked and not piss anyone off. For what I’m doing now I’m using an open back 5e3 amp. I agree there’s a sweetness to an open back cab the closed backs lack!!

I'm an open back guy, but I would really like to get a ported 2x10 cabinet. I love the punch and quickness of 10" speakers but after playing out a while, I did miss the bottom end of a 12". I played with 2 10" and a 12 and that was super nice.

From what I've read, Earcandy cabs are the place to go for front ported cabs. They make great cabs in general, but they are one of the few cabinet companies out there that really do the ported guitar cabinet thing., and they have a 2x10 called the Sweet Tooth.  You can also get them shipped unloaded if you wanted to put some Jensen or other speakers in there. Right now they only have Eminence 10 inch drivers available, though they have 9 choices of speaker.

I like both open and closed back depending upon the amp I am using and the speaker....the Mesa spec V30 is wonderful with the right amp. I had a pair in my 2x12 that sang with the Blonde Bassman at gig volume but was overkill at home and for recording.

Regarding Earcandy I have a pretty surf green 1x10 that has a tolex issue on the bottom...and while I do like how the cab sounds, getting the seller to actually build and ship it was a damn nightmare. Multiple promises made and broken. Good cabs, just be forewarned going in.

I love the Vintage 30s in my TremOVerb combo, but the one in my Stiletto Combo just does not work well with the voicing of the amp. The vintage 30 really works well in some situations, not in others.
