Actually, I was under the impression that it was the 1/4 inch cap but it may be the veneer. You may be able to tell at the pickup routs.

As much as I love the newer Standards with the 1/4" maple cap, the older ones with a thin veneer over the one-piece mahogany body just resonated like an old violin. My '73 Fender still doesn't sustain anywhere near my '81 Standard Bass.
