                                       This ^^^^^^^^^. Teflon tape will do the job just fine and will make up for any discrepancy between   the control shaft and the control knob I have used it before and it works great.

Use a flathead screw driver as a wedge (gently) from the top to very slightly expand the shaft.

It's relevant to note that the shaft is spline'd and the fit is snug enough that it doesn't allow for anything more substantial than a single wind of Teflon tape, IF that.
