hamerhead Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 https://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid Hadn't seen these before. I've been wanting to downsize/lighten up and was thinking about building something from scratch. There's no way I could do what this does for $80, so I'm giving it a try.
Jimbilly Posted March 28, 2024 Posted March 28, 2024 I've been opening those sdotd emails, some tempting stuff, today it is stupid deal of the hour, which I don't like as much.
hamerhead Posted March 30, 2024 Author Posted March 30, 2024 It arrived today (stock photo): The picture makes it look like it might be kind of flimsy or flexible. It ain't. It's rock solid. And the option of laying the front row flat is a winner. It is more compact than the Pedaltrain Classic 2 it's replacing, and weighs 4.6 pounds empty. That's not as light as I'd hoped, but the smaller footprint is nice and I should be able to mount 2 'always on' pedals underneath and out of the way, along with the power supply. The case is really nice and there was Velcro and zip ties included. It really was a stupid good deal.
cmatthes Posted March 30, 2024 Posted March 30, 2024 I just missed that one! It was there when I first clicked on your link..took a phone call, and POOF!
hamerhead Posted March 30, 2024 Author Posted March 30, 2024 Never let phone calls interrupt the important stuff, Chris.
hamerhead Posted April 30, 2024 Author Posted April 30, 2024 I put this together a couple weeks ago and thought a follow-up was necessary: The thing is really solid and I like the smaller footprint than the Pedaltrain Classic II, but some things kinda blow. When the front 'half' is laid flat, pedals just barely fit and the gap/opening at the topside of the pedal isn't tall enough to clear end-mounted cables. The B9 is a typical popular-sized enclosure. The end-mounted power cord puts it just over the front edge of the board. If they had split the board in the exact middle (giving the bottom half an additional inch or so of width/depth), it would have cured both issues. Underneath, there is no flat spot to mount a power supply. I finagled a Power Plus in there and zip tied it, but I'm not a fan. And the power cord sticks awkwardly out the front, making it susceptible to damage in transport. Again, not a fan. I might glue on some foam blocks for protection. Good thing I don't gig much anymore. I was able to hide 2 pedals underneath with the power supply, so that was a plus. But having to use the combination of zip ties and velcro really fengs with my shui. So there you have it - a pretty good idea not nearly as well executed as it could have been. It's functional but could have been sooo much better. Still a good deal at $80, but I'm not selling the Pedaltrain just yet...
