just takes a little bit of practice. I rarely played my B12S, and for the Chicago Jam, I *had* to fingerpick as I was playing that monster on "Sweet Emotion". Blistered my right index finger from just that one song but it all came out fine and, so I'm told, clear enough. I just had to practice that song for about an hour and I had it down.

I set mine as low as possible, which was around 4/64" at the 12th fret for the fundamentals, and 3/64" for the octaves. Unplugged, there was *slight* buzzing, but you can't hear it when plugged in. If you can "brush" your fingers, then playing a 12ver with fingerpicking is no problem; it just takes a plucking motion that kind of aims into the instrument body, if that makes any sense. But playing with a pick is where you have the most control. Using the dual outputs from a Valvulator is how I got equal outputs, split to a bass amp and a guitar amp.

there are a couple foreign-made guitars I have an eye on: a couple Epiphones, and for Californian lovers, the most recent Ibanez RGA72...a setneck Californian clone. Since such guitars would be for the style and not the tone quality of the wood, they might be good candidates for these new Lace pickups.

just discovered these last night. These are some very COOL looking pickups!!! Has anyone tried these? While they are very cool looking and the idea behind them is interesting, I'm hesitant to buy a couple sets to try out. I spent untold amounts of time and money trying out virtually the entire Duncan catalog, getting a feel for which pickup goes with which body wood and the sound that goes along with it. Will they help bring out more of the natural sound of a Hamer? Or will they sterilize the mojo....??

I didn't realize just how amazing a 12ver is for playing out live, until I played it at the Chicago Jam...having already sold it If your bass part is just single notes, with a 12 string, you're strumming each note and your sound is thunderous!! Way more fun

I took the liberty of bolding the songs that have all the slots filled, or just one missing - mostly to help my ADHD brain sort out what songs I need to practice. Some of us have girlfriends/wives that are tolerant of our music addiction, and bemoan those who don't care or even worse, try to put a stop to it. not that they exactly turn up that often, but the guitar that gets played the MOST, is the 12 string neck of my Californian doubleneck. So if I had a 12-string Californian, that would be what I'd be grabbing the most often. Dunno if I'd call it Rickenbacker-ish, but it chimes when coil-tapped, can sound like a Gibson EDS-1275 when humbucking, or throw it into metal mode and it still sounds good with the gain set to 11.

Steve, does yours have a plug for an AC adaptor? I can run four pedals off of my Valvulator...

I've been playing my rig now, and I've decided I can't stand the XT Live - it kills the response even though I've got it surrounded by tubes before and after, although it's useful for getting copies of different amp sounds for recording. So I need front end pedals, specifically a compressor. I've never been a pedal junkie; I just came across the MXR Dyna Comp because it's the "Nashville Sound" (whatever that is!), and seeing as Nashville is my new home, makes sense...? But then there's original battery-powered units, the $69.99 new ones, and the "hand-wired reissue blah blah" for like triple the price. Will the basic new one be fine? How about the Super Comp? Or are there other great compressor pedals I should be looking at? I'm basically just trying to improve on my basic amp's sound (Marshall Haze 40).

God forbid someone do that to a Jim O'Connor finish! I personally think the guitar in the clip is getting a really, really nice tone though.

Fuck. This is news I definitely did not need to hear. Once I tried SOS, it was the final piece of my tone puzzle. Everything else sounds like crap to me, and I've tried everything. They don't break, they last forever, they don't go dead (in a sense, the strings are made "pre-dead"). My Cali 12 string gets its sound from a custom gauged set, with a .018w G string. I ordered a stash in 2005, got it in a couple weeks, and am down to one set in reserve for each gauge set I use, and was just about to reorder. I have the only (as far as I know) 12 string bass string set made by SOS. I never got billed for it; that should have been $100 or so! Four years is a long time I guess; back in 2005, Dean would answer my emails within MINUTES. A couple hours was a long time for him. I can wait six months for an order, they'd just better show up eventually. But now I don't know if I ought to even try. I'm a big believer in these strings. Big. This is really depressing. And yes, why would people keep throwing money at SOB even with all these problems? They're that good; regular strings go dead so fast, sound way too harsh, aren't stable with tuning.

I've done the cross country thing, seen a lot of those places, but I REALLY REALLY need to do it on a bike - cars are just too insulating from the world. I'd pack up my bike and ride and tour, but in this country, I'd be done in two days. If you've never done it, one way or another, you've GOT to see all of our country. You could be born, live, and die without ever leaving US soil, but if you've hit all 48 States, you've seen enough. For me, I still need to hit Arizona, New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the US Virgin Islands.
