2011 HFC Year In Review... Best Posts, Best Buys, etc.
django49 replied to Hamerhack's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Bought too much, sold too little. Two things (inward) that stand out......Ultimate Artist, which I had wanted for years. The korina Duo-Tone is easily in the same class----Probably the only HAMER I will ever have that is featured in their gallery. -
Mirage Found!

A friend was thinking of selling one a while back.......I thought (and told him) I thought his target was too high, but I can try to catch him if he is still around (Phoenix) over the holidays. -
Ouch.....Remember once buying a Twin Reverb, from a music store no less, It was put in an oversized box, with NO packing material. It arrived with the sound of broken glass rattling......The baffle was broken (no easy thing), it shattered the tubes and the hits kept on coming.....Totalled. They must have dropped it off a PLANE, not just a truck. FWIW, this involved neither UPS or FedEx......And my purchase price was refunded,

What's wrong with Ringo?!? Sure, he was doofy and annoying, but he was a hell of a time keeper. So, he was doofy, annoying and had the musicianship of a wristwatch. Perfect. I'll take a dead Moon over a live Timex. I'm just being hard on the guy because . Ringo? Peace and Love? Peace on him, luv........

Arrived today. Pretty amazing sound and versatility from such a small and inexpensive (on sale) box. I think I can cover a pretty healthy part of my main sounds by switching between the first channel and either a version of the "Bassman" or the second position of the "British" "voices". Should be even better with replacement 6v6s. Plan to make that little slanted stand to angle the sound up and also direct the waves from the open back to the front.......Most likely not until after making the other holiday gifts in the shop. It will not make me quit on some other amps that I love, but for something small and light "to go" for casual use, this works well......I appreciate the heads up on the prices.

Yes, the "plucking motion" makes sense......But hard to not mute the strings at least a little bit that way. I have never tried a Valvulator but it sounds like a good idea.....Probably at least one step better than a simple AB box. Thanks for the tips!

Using a pick on bass is a foreign concept, but I can learn! This really has a sound like a "synth bass" (when played with a pick). I like it! There is ONE MORE QUESTION that comes to mind. For those with a 12ver......About how high do you set the strings/action? This one needs new strings anyway and looks like it should be tweaked a bit. I would think the strings are about 3/16" above the 12th fret. Is it unreasonable to think it should play well (certainly easier!) if I can get that to about 1/8, maybe SLIGHTLY less? I have another bass that is under 1/8' and it seems to play very well. But what do I know, I mainly play guitar!

I appreciate the advice. Arrived today. Brief concern about the lousy sound. New battery fixed that. Will need to dig up some suitable strings-----Or scrape the rust off these. Initial reaction is that this (string lineup) will tend to ring better with downstrokes (pick or thumb) than finger (upstrokes), Bit we will see soon enough.

I appreciate the good advice. This IS the one that closed on the Bay yesterday for a total of $945, inc shipping. I did put in a somewhat higher bid, but it seemed a couple others were playing it $10 at a time. So I got off easier than I thought, esp since there appear to be a couple NOS ones around in the $2500 (asking) ballpark. Hope that it makes its way up the left coast, about 1,000 miles, by the weekend. Just when I said "No more" to near term purchases..... However, I have sold one head, one large cab and one guitar in the past week, so I am moving in the right direction. A couple more sales possibly pending.

Perfect comment! Since our house has walls a foot thick and the neighbors are 100 yards away, they may hold off on calling the cops until they are sure it is not an earthquake.

Alright......Just got the hammer (Hamer) down on a 12 string bass auction. Not sure what the H I'm gonna DO with it, or even whether it is a decent price.......Just had to check one more thing off the "Gotta have someday" list. Any recommendations on amplifying, etc? I am NOT a bass player (as anyone hearing me play will probably attest). However, I do have a 200w Hartke head, an SWR cab with 2 x 10 and tweeter plus a Thiele cab with a 300w EV speaker. That will probably have to do, but I am always interested in hearing of different options.

thats great man!!! did you say you still have a Heritage Flattop? Further followup....Noticing your stable of Heritage guitars.......Love to compare notes....... Once upon a time I owned several of their harder to find ones. One Super Eagle was well used, The other was a brand new custom order that the buyer was unable to complete. (I think the factory got something wrong on his order)......The main thing was it was a THIN body. One plain Eagle that was really nice sounding. One 575 and one 575 Custom. A 576 (like the 575 but with a 335 style block inside(!) The Roy Clark had spectacular quilt (Why did I sell it?) The Prospect Custom with Gibson 57s and their VIP system. One of those Gary Moore limited editions ("Pauls"). An H-150 Goldtop. Even the SAE, which was modded to be an "everything" guitar. Routed to drop in Gibson pups, with coil splitters to go with the piezo/bridge thing. All in the past....Just have those 2 left. On to other things.....Too many other things.

Just took delivery of an Artist Ultimate this afternoon, after wanting to find one for several years. Thanks to David E for letting it go! I am interested in any comments people have from their own experience with the pickups and sound. It sounds very little like my old Artist Custom (with the Seth Lovers). Not at all bad, just different. Seems brighter, almost like single coils. Also, very powerful output. Of course, besides the "Ultimate pickups", the Ultimate has the ebony board and "Monster Wire" (to the extent that makes a difference). It may be my imagination, but I THINK the top is also slightly thinner. I would say there are SOME similarities with the Custom (HB) pickups on the Monaco Elite, as well as the Double Ds on the Talladega and the Phat Cats on the Newport. Yet still different than any of them. In a slightly different vein, does anyone have opinions on adjusting pickups? More specifically, my (old) Artist has the poles raised slightly in an arc more or less matching that of the fingerboard/frets. Which would tend to give a little more accent to the middle strings, at least relative to the outside strings. The Ultimate pickups are pretty much flat. I fully intend to get used to the way it came setup before messing with it. However, opinions are welcome. I have already learned a LOT on this site (as well as finding the guitar I have long wanted). THANKS! Someday, I should run down a Standard.......Someday.

Those Dunlop sharkfin picks are the great unknown trick.......I bought a couple gross of them and give them to everyone. I stick a small piece of velcro on one side and I no longer drop them as I shift positions. Use as a standard pick, a "doublepick" to simulate a 12 string or the ridged side to simulate a "chorus".
