Stokesdead Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 I started a new thread because I butchered the other one all up and it was a little hard to follow. OK so I get this guitar for free well most of it any way. NO HEADSTOCK! My drummer brings it to practice to give to the other guitar player in my band. He says no thanks its trash. So then my drummer looks at me and I say hell yeah I'll take it. Its made out of wood right, well then I can do something with it. At the minimum I can burn it. (I was always a pyro as a child) Then drummer boy says, "my buddy said it's an old Hamer" I say, No way. Its probably an Epiphone or something. No one would do this to an American made guitar." Well I started to rethink that when I sanded it today and descovered a maple top. I was not thinking about how thin they used to make those veneers and before I realized it I sanded through it on the horns. Then Steve Haynie tells me on the other thread that it is a Hamer b/c of the control cavity route. Now this was gonna be something I wanted to do myself but know I dont know. Can anyone tell me the date of this guitar from the one volume pot that was left in the guitar. Assuming it is original. Tremolo anyone? Ahh Maple: Its hard for me to tell with no finish but it seems like pretty nice figuring to me. Some of you with a better eye for such can probably decide for yourself. If anybody can tell me more about this guitar from the pics of the pot please let me know. Or if there are any other pics I could take to better narrow it down I can. ~CS
serial Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 1980 Hamer Special. BAD butcher job on the trem route!
Stokesdead Posted November 24, 2006 Author Posted November 24, 2006 Really! Thats cool. Is it fixable? Should I give up the project to a pro. Greg shoot me an email when you get a chance and let me know what you think on this one. Thanks for the help Steve! You are the best when someone needs some help ID'ing an old Hamer.~CS
cmatthes Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Chris:If you can get the headstock back/reattached (!!!!), you should plug up those nasty holes, rout for a 3-coil and make an opaque finished Electraglide.C'mon - you know you want to!
Stokesdead Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 Needs a Baker neck, eh, Serial?Who's Baker?~Chris
cmatthes Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Needs a Baker neck, eh, Serial?Who's Baker?~ChrisGene Baker - the guy who made those "Keebler" Les Paul replicas.
kizanski Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Gene Baker - the guy who made those "Keebler" Les Paul replicas. That's just a vicious rumor.
Stokesdead Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 Does he make guitar necks. I "googled" him and it looks like he went bankrupt and Ed Roman took over building his guitars.Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing. ~CS
wyldbil Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Yoda. You seek Yoda...er... BCR Greg I mean. He can get you pointed the right way.
serial Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Kiz is referring to some of the Baker necks I have I suppose. I acquired several of the necks in process from the auction of the items in the Baker shop. I fully intend on mating at least one of them to a Hamer body at some point!
Steve Haynie Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Chris, you should only use a chemical stripper on a guitar finish, not a sander! Once you get a headstock or a neck you could keep a tremolo bridge on there, but please come up with a neater routing job.If you are going to refinish that guitar you need to contact Stike (up in North Carolina) about prepping the wood, etc. At the very least you need to get a book on guitar finishing from Stewart MacDonald.
Stokesdead Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 Hmmm....Thanks for the tip Steve. Next time I will know.~CS
Stokesdead Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 ok next question. Lets say I use a tremolo. Which one? I have ZERO experience with tremolos. Never really liked em cause of the way I bend notes and play fretted notes at the same time the fretted note goes flat with the bend. Whats a good tremolo to use on a 24 3/4" scale guitar that well stay in tune?~CS
