Newport vs Artist Korina P90

I've been struggling trying to figure out which guitar is my "number one". I used to have a clear number one, my PRS EG. That guitar is currently not even in the running. In fact, I haven't played it in a long time.

Right now, I'm trying to choose mainly between the Newport and Artist Korina P90. I love the sound of both guitars. I like the newport sound a little more than the Korina, but the Korina just fits my body really well. So in terms of comfort, the Korina wins. I was amazed by how much more confidence I played at practice last night when I switched from the Newport to Artist Korina. I just felt at home with it.

Anyway, I still don't know what my number one is. Actually sometimes my American Tele and my Hamer Studio calls out to me and says "play me instead". :0)

Play the Studio. You know you want to.

Sorry, just a personal preference. Sounds like the problem is more along body style, than tone or playability.

I don't know what kind of stage volume levels Barfly plays at, but at hi gain/hi vol the Artist will probably give you a little less problem with feedback than the Newport. But that may not be an issue.

Perhaps you should just bring them both !!! You don't go to a gig with just one axe, do you?

Does the Artist have Seth Lover pups and the Newport has PhatCats? The voice difference might fit your setlist better with one guitar or the other. Set One with the Newport, Set Two with the Artist....

Changing guitars gives you, your band, and the audience a slightly different guitar voice to listen to. That can be a good thing. It can also be a bad thing if you are really having a good night on guitar A and you switch to guitar B. Sometimes "Da Mojo" come wichya, sometimes it don't !

Bring 'em both.

My old friend and high school bass player visited for a weekend last summer and laughed at my Hamer collection, asking how many versions of the same guitar I needed. He has one bass, and he's owned it since high school (an Alembic Spoiler). He had long teased me for my guitar buying compulsion.

By the end of the weekend he'd played all of them and was amazed at the tonal variations between the guitars, and also the uniform excellence among them. He doesn't tease me about all my Hamers anymore!

Yesterday I was playing my Archtop GT with the Gibson mini-humbucker reissues through my Fender Cyber-Deluxe. I dialed in a setting using the blackface model and tweaked it until I had a terrific combination of punchy and fat, and played it for about an hour. Then I decided to try that patch with my Newport and 30th Anniversary LTD. It sounded completely different with these guitars...not bad, but it just brought out a different set of characteristics. But no question it worked best with the GT. (As an aside: anybody who claims that all modeling amps make every guitar sound the same should try out the Cyber-Deluxe!).

Some people seem to have "the sound" that they strive for, and use a specific guitar on a particular song. I like to bring different guitars to band practice because each one makes me approach a song differently. I guess that's why I don't have a "number one"...I just love the variety. It's why a modeling amp is a natural for me, because I love exploring new sounds without owning a garage full of gear. With all those models and my six Hamers I have seemingly endless choices!

I know what you mean. Currently I'm torn for number 1 between an Artist Korina with P90's and My newport with WCR Darkbursts. I'm with you as I feel a bit more comfortable with the Artist. Like an old freind vs a new aquaintance. I guess if I had to rank them today it would be.

1. Artist Korina

2. Newport

3. Monaco III (this one has more limited reach to the high frets than the others, but tone is stellar!)

4. 79 Sunburst

5. 95 Studio

6. Fender 60's Relic Strat

7. 1966 Fender Telecaster

Of course this could all change by tomorrow...

Right now, my plan for this weekend's gig is to bring the Newport (w/ Phat Cats) and Artist Korina P90. Will open up with the Newport given that I need the whammy bar for the 1st song and then switch to the Artist on the 3rd song to finish up the set. Only playing one set.

Sorry ET_KenW, your Blueburst Studio will not see any action this weekend. :P

It probably wouldn't have seen any action this weekend with me either. :P
