Researching all things Plexi: suggestions wanted
JES1680 replied to Travis's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
An update to my recommendation. Yes I’d still recommend the Marshall SV20 with a power station, but last I week came across a Friedman Plex new for less than a used one, couldn’t pass it up. I’ve had several Freidmans over the years and they always sound good at first, but then I tire of the “idealized” Marshall sound they typically have. The Plex is different and so far (fingers crossed) I”m really liking it. There are a lot of sounds in this thing. The cleans are much better IMO than his typical clean channels and it does the Plexi thing very well and the bright switches are really useful. It can be bright and crisp but can also set to be warm with a bit of sag (low input and VAC engaged). The MV is OK, not good at TV levels as it adds gain at very low MV settings (barely cracked open), and sounds fizzy to me. I’m running it through a Boss TAE mainly to drop the volume a little add verb and delay, and get away from the fizz when I have to go really low in the house, also the cab I’m using does not have my favorite speakers currently so the TAE allows me to EQ it and fix some of the speaker issues. Overall I’m pretty impressed but not selling the SV20 yet. Time will tell. -

I chased the plexi thing for years. Had a 72 metal pannel 50 watt that was great but ultimately too much for what I do these days. Metroplex was really really good, but again 100 watts even with a great master it was still a half stack. Did the Bogner stuff, Friedman, Top Hat, etc... most of the boutique M style amps. What I've found recently that just does it for me?? Marshal SV20 with a Fryette Power station. It's plexi to me warts and all as it can be very bright depending how you set the vol, controls and how loud after about 7 or so the bright cap is out, but this is an easy fix to lift the bright cap or so I'm told. I run it with the matching 1x12 cab and it's perfect for home use. YMMV. For a bit more balance or warmth try the ST20 I have one of those as well and it's very very good. -

Random (Music and Guitar Related) Thoughts Thread
JES1680 replied to LucSulla's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Ha! I remember sitting around for what seemed like days trying to figure out the lyrics to Long Cool Woman. Virtually impossible we never got it right. -
Much of it depends on the guitar. In MN I run a stand alone humidifier in the winter and can keep it between 40-50%. I have a dehumidifier in the summer to keep it between 50-60%. Some guitars it affects more, I have a Tele that I'm adjusting the neck 3-4 times a year. A couple others that require twice a year, and some (mostly Gibsons) that never require an adjustment.

Love these old archtops. I have a 1940 L30 great lo-fi sound and not too loud.

I think Viv is a very underrated guitarist. Saw him on the Last In Line tour and was amazed. As for Ozzie, I always kind of listened to him to hear his guitar players the guy could pick em... His voice meh

Discussion - Worst Sounding Amp You've Ever Owned...
JES1680 replied to coolfeel's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Late 70s Peavey Backstage 30. On the plus side there was no overdrive channel but for a kid into Kiss this pristine clean country amp did not impress. But hey Mom and Dad bought it for my birthday so who am I to complain. A Boss super overdirve helped until I saved up to buy a Peavey Special 130 which compared to the backstage sounded awesome. That's how bad the backstage was. ugggg. -
NAD! Divided by 13 - Holy . . .
JES1680 replied to BadgerDave's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Great Score! These are nice, I ended up putting a G12H30 in mine. Some of the models can be very aggressive, and they all really shine at live volumes. If you get a chance try an EDT, and BTR. These are my favorites of his, course the JRT is really nice too. I don't think I will ever sell my RSA. -

Rant and warning - Snake Oil Strings
JES1680 replied to BadgerDave's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I had the same issue a year ago. Took 4 months to get the strings if I remember correctly. I love the strings, if for no other reason than they only need a single strech when you put them on and they seem to hold tune much better than anything else on all sorts of guitars. However I've gone back to DR's (just bought a case today), as I can't deal with the wait or lack of any semblence of customer service. Hope you get yours soon. -

Funny you should mention the Reverend, I need to recoup some funds and the Rev and my Hayseed may be on the block. The Carvin has to stay as it's the only link to my 80's roots. -

Who needs wallpaper.....Hell who needs drywall when you've got guitars. I put it under the heading "social experiment" how long can I go without my wife forcing the issue of finishing the basement. I like having the guitars readily available to play. I have a humidifier and de-humidifier for the different seasons. Sure they are better protected in a case, but I bought them to play. -
the relic thing getting sorta silly
JES1680 replied to Citrus's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I'm always amazed at these threads. 1. It's a finish on a guitar. It could just as easily be hot pink sparkle. 2. I'm amazed at the number of people who get offended at the idea of a relic guitar. Don't like = Don't buy. It's not like these are puppies that are being beaten it's a piece of wood. 3. If you take your new poly coated guitar and play it for 20 years it ain't gonna get worn like a relice'd lacquer guitar. 4. Does anyone really think that people are buying these to pose as a rocker that's been around and played in dive bars for years??? Really?? Personally a worn guitar played by anyone doesn't give them "cred". If I played and releiced my own guitar the "natural" way in bars for the last 25 years I'd still sound like SHIT! 5. I believe the major draw to most relics is that they don't feel like a new guitar. They feel worn in. Some people like that and can't afford a vintage Fender with all the finish naturally worn off the neck. They also may not have another 20-30 years to get a new guitar to that point. 6. I have one relic guitar that was done by our own Roy B. It's an amazing instrument regardless of the finish, it blows my naturally reliced 66 Tele out of the water. Play, Feel, Sound and a distant looks... are what drives me to buy a guitar. YMMV. -
What kind of vintage amp should I get?
JES1680 replied to jwood's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Not sure where you are located, but my friend has a Blackface Bassman and 2x12 cab that's very original for sale. I thin he's looking for $650.00 for the pair. He also has a Blond Bandmaster that's been modded by Jeff Krumm of Savage Amps to run EL34's with some other tricks thrown in as well for around $500.00 head and cab. I've got a 64 Bandmaster that I'd part with as well, but unless you're local these would be $$ to ship. Any of these types of amps (piggybacks look sooo cool) would suit your purposes and you should be able to find them fairly easily . Good luck -
a Jackson and a Charvel, new to my collection (nhc)

I used to have a 3B exactly like that one. Love the pearl white sparkle. Great bass, wish I'd never sold it.
