joe gagan Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 this is my first post, I just found this forum. thank you for the opportunity to tell my story.The guitar: LEFTY cherry sunburst 83 that was ordered by a dealer in El Paso.He had it in his store for a few years, but it didn't sell so he put it away. After he closed the store he kept some inventory till the mid 90s when he needed to pay some medical bills. I purchased it from him in '97.Imagine, a new guitar that was almost 15 years old!When I first played it, the fret tops were slightly rusted, it still had the original strings. With some new strings and a slight buff to the frets, tonal nirvana was all there! It has a mild flame, dot inlays, and plays/sounds better than any post '60s Les Paul I have seen. The Dimarzio PAF style pickups are wired magnetically out of phase, so those wonderful Peter Green bluesy tones are easy to get. This adds to the versatility of the two humbucker configuration considerably. When used on their own, these pickups have the perfect balance of bite, sweetness, and response, without the midrange mud that plagues the majority of humbucking pickups. I lowered the front pickup to increase the sweetness and achieve a nice volume match to the bridge pickup.It has been kept in stock condition as it is rare to find such an untouched original piece. Upon contacting Hamer in 97 , I spoke with a man who had been at the Hamer Co. in 83 when this guitar was made. He stated that there were very very few lefties ever made of this model. I used it on recordings and some live gigs between 97 and 01. I am mainly a Fender player and can no longer justify storing a guitar I don't use often enough. It needs to go to a deserving lefty player.For the discriminating lefty player, it may be another ten or twenty years before an example so well preserved becomes available. It has a few minor chips as the lacquer is quite fragile. There is no belt buckle wear whatsoever, though. joe gagan Posted May 3, 2005 Author Posted May 3, 2005 The neck is what I would call 'medium' or average. maybe slightly on the large size of average.The funny thing that I noticed when playing is that the neck doesn't taper all that much. It seems as thick at the 12th fret as at is at the 1st. I recall that most Gibbys tend to get a little thicker as they get closer to the body. Or am I trippin'?
