Maroon 5?

ok, so I'm a bit out of touch with the Pop world since I just found out about these guys, but they seem pretty cool. I like that they seem to spread out and fuse pop, lounge jazz, funk, and soul in their material.

"Harder to Breathe" is easily the coolest song I've ever heard on soccer mom radio. Interpret that as you will, but I liked it so much that I bought the CD the day after hearing it for the first time (probably the only time in the past 10 years that's happened). I dig the new single too.

One of the better new bands out there IMO.

Yeah, you are a little late to the party. Weird thing is that these guys had some big hits on their first album and it was a long time between that and their latest effort. Didn't seem to lose any steam because of it. They've been getting good promotion though - an American Idol appearace, some contestants singing their stuff, and they have some kinda special category set up for them on Comcast's onDemand this month. I noticed they jumped up into the top 100 downloads on itunes shorly after their AI appearance.

+1. I just got the unedited version off of Rhapsody to put on my Sansa. Even better than the radio version.

We've been doing a cover or two of theirs for about a year and a half. The guys may not dig 'em so much, but the little girls understand...

When I first heard Harder to Breathe, I thought it was Justin Timberlake! And the first single off their current album sounds like they have gone completely boy-band (especially from a production standpoint). Their music is very catchy, but it doesn't do anything for me at an emotional level.

I dig them! love the first CD.......cant wait to pick up the new one.....Dr. Dre's bass player produced it (for pointless info)

And I thought it was Rob Thomas.

I cannot stand Maroon 5. They're to pop/rock what Fred Durst is to...well, to musicians.

I saw the appearance on American Idol. Funny how I heard at least three distinct guitar tracks, but only one guy "playing" onstage. And the singer was about a quarter-step flat throughout.

LOL! That's quite a statement. So who do you like in the pop/rock realm these days?

A band sugarcoated it up on American Idol? Get outta here! And if you can't sing flat on AI, you can't sing flat anywhere.

Did you happen to catch the SNL performance?

I'd much rather listen to John Mayer, in that market space. As far as what bookends bands like Maroon 5 these days, though, I'd take Pink or All American Rejects.

Fair enough. At least you like something new and are not one of these crotchety old "get off my lawn ya damn kids" types.

Ah, that would be me.

I don't even like John Mayer. But at least he has integrity, I think. Maroon 5 has as much of that as Bon Jovi did, circa 1986.

I really do dig Pink and AAR, though.

My band does Harder to Breathe. It's a great rocker.

I heard one of the new tunes on the radio and I swear it sounds like it could be old Motown recorded with new technology.

Another zinger!

What makes you say that? Or, more specifically, what makes you say that he has more integrity than Maroon 5?

Along those lines, the singer did a duet with Stevie Wonder recently and I heard a lot of similarities in their voices.

This is gonna be a great thread, I can tell!

Because Mayer appears to be doing stuff he likes. Maroon 5, like Bon Jovi twenty years ago, genre-hopped 'til they found something that sold.

And Mayer hasn't genre-hopped, going from breathy acoustic soothsayer for the Dave Matthews-worshipping sorority set to face-making electric Clapton/SRV/Mayfield wannabe?

Did you miss the part about "until it sells"? If Mayer was only about the money, he'd have stayed in marketspace 1. Looks to me as though he's got varied tastes and is doing a little bit of everything he wants to do.

No, I didn't miss it. I'm just not buying it. Perhaps he sold out off the bat to get to where he is today. Makes his initial incarnation decidedly lacking in integrity.

And I don't get how Bon Jovi genre-hopped. They were always hair metallers, at least until they went adult contemporary and now country.

If you had seen them live supporting the first record, you'd never have believed the same band would write anything that appeared on Slippery When Wet. They were supporting the Scorpions on that first tour and they gave up nothing in the 'heavy' department.

Are you trying to tell me that "Runaway" and "She Don't Know Me" were heavy? LOL Prototypical hair metal, as was the stuff on 7800, especially the visual presentation on the videos. SWW blew up because of the songs, not a change in musical direction.

Posted

Did you see the tour, or not?

I did not. But most bands are "heavier" live than on record. And on record, they were the same on their debut as they were three or four albums later, albeit with better songwriting and production.

I saw Vixen open for Ozzy in '89 and you could conceivably call them "heavy" based on that performance. Well, certainly "heavier" than their recorded stuff, which was sugary hair metal pap.
