jisham Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Saw Keith Urban this past Friday at Verizon Center in DC and it was, without a doubt, one of the best shows I've seen. I have to chuckle that he's a "country star" because although I'm a big fan and have all his CDs, in my eyes the dude is rocker with a pop sensibility. Regardless, he puts on a high energy show and has one of the best bands around. Great stage setup as well with what looked liked the world's largest high def screen covering the entire back of the stage. For gear nuts like me, it was nirvana. He played mostly a really old, beat up goldtop LP but did pull out his Tele and Junior a couple of times too. For amps, he had two 65 Amplifier half stacks, one on both side of the drums. Last time I saw him, he was using Bogner Shivas (one my favorite amps), but I gotta say his tone this time was simply stellar. And as well all know, the dude can play circles around most anyone. His band had a drummer, bassist, and three other guitarists (two of which also played banjo and mandolin). They all used old Marshall heads and 412 cabs and all kinds of cool axes -- Gretches, a Zemaitis, Les Pauls, 335s, and Teles. The crowd was about 70 percent females, with the rest being what seemed to be bored husbands/boyfriends along with gay fans, like Larry and me. We were both up banging our heads, dancing around and getting into the show the whole time, while the bored guys sitting around us sat on their asses while the females danced with us! Too funny.
DavidE Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I'd like to see a triple bill with him, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill. Three super pickers with some great pop tunes.
Bruiser Brody Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Saw that dude many years ago at a guitar show in some gear co's booth playing a beat up SG, clothes torn up, mulletish hairdo, looked like he had been up for two weeks straight and ripping it up playing skynyrd-type licks, fast chicken-pickin, etc. I remember thinkin' "Damn that X dealer can play!"haha Now he's married to old what's-her-face from Tom Cruise's house. All kidding aside, the dude is good...Nashville makeover or not.
Turdus Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 know the name, but nothing by him. What's his most rawkin' CD?
Stike Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 One of his 3 guitarists is an old buddy of mine, we logged a several thousand miles of van time many years ago.
SteveB Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I'd like to see a triple bill with him, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill. Three super pickers with some great pop tunes.A Country "G3" would kick butt. I'd see it.
kizanski Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I'd like to see a triple bill with him, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill. Three super pickers with some great pop tunes. That might be almost too much to take. Unless, of course, you're looking for an excuse to sell all of your guitars.
Thisismike Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 know the name, but nothing by him. What's his most rawkin' CD?He as a live DVD that is pretty good. Mind you the material is a bit sedate if you live on a steady diet of Randy Rhoads and Dimebag. But his playing, not only fits the song, but shows a great command of the instrument.Brad Paisley, Gill and Keith would be a hell of a show.
jisham Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 One of his 3 guitarists is an old buddy of mine, we logged a several thousand miles of van time many years ago. which one? i'm guessing the skinny dude with the thick longish black hair. Kinda looked like he should be in a metal band actually. He played a wicked slide solo during a Steve Miller tune they played during the encore. know the name, but nothing by him. What's his most rawkin' CD? I'd also suggest checking out his live DVD to get a feel for what he does.

Brad was never a metal dude but he is rock n roll guy through and through. I used to tour manage a band he used to be in. After that he played with Ryan Adams and Son Volt for a while.

savethematches Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Check out the CD he did with his band before going solo. The band was called The Ranch and the CD was self-titled. "Ghost in this Guitar" is drop-dead impressive.

And if you want to see Keith totally RIP with The Ranch, check this out:Devil Went Down to Georgia -- The Ranch live in Nashville
savethematches Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 The first live clip I ever saw of The Ranch was a performance on some evening talk show on TNN. They did "Walk in the Country" and Keith was playing over the top of the neck and all sorts of crazy stuff. They were an awesome power trio. Some of his solo stuff pales in comparison, IMO.
PastorPaul Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I'd like to see a triple bill with him, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill. Three super pickers with some great pop tunes. Those guys can sing, too. The first time I saw Vince Gill, I got mad at God for giving him both the vocal and guitar talent he had. I should have gotten one or the other, right?

If I remember correctly, both Gill and Grant divorced their spouses to marry each other. I reckon they deserve it.
