zorrow Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Just had this crazy idea of installing a couple of humbucker-sized P-90's in my all-mahogany white Vector. I've read a couple of positive reviews about the Seymour Duncan Phat Cats. From the tone chart and the description, it looks like they would do the job for me -- medium output, slightly boost to the highs, good articulation and well-defined attack... and well, given that they were designed for Hamer guitars (and that I want to believe the hype, he, he ), I'm willing to give them a good try. So, any nickel-covered set around for sale? TIA! PS: I am also open to any well-backed alternative, so please feel free to make any suggestion.

Not sure what kind of tone you want, but in the Newport the Phat Cats are twang city. Exacerbated by the spruce top no doubt. Not sure what they sound like in solid mahogany.
Guest Mike Lee Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 They'd probably sound like a Duncan Vintge P-90 except a little softer due to the Alnico II magnets instead of Alnico V. From my experience, a Duncan Vintage P-90 in a mahogany guitar sounds almost perfect.
zorrow Posted November 20, 2007 Author Posted November 20, 2007 Someone told me that a set of Rio Grande Bastard and Fat Bastard pups could also do. I'm keeping an eye on eBay just to see if lower prices pop, but I won't wait forever anyways.
Brooks Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 i put phatcats in the mahogany special i had (bought from DavidB, sold to Stokesdead). not too twangy, i used it for several very RAWK solos on our cd (billygoat, skank chase, 1st time). stike had an extra rio fat bastard for sale, email him.

zorrow Posted December 3, 2007 Author Posted December 3, 2007 Bump! BTW, I could also consider a set of Gibson P94's (nickel & black) -- ok, have I to go to evil-Bay?
guitfiddler Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 http://instruments.search.ebay.com/dream-9...ZR40QQsacatZ619I put a set of these in a mahogany flying v (an Edwards Gibson clone). Still have it, these pups are keepers. They are much like Strat pickups on steroids, the tone is like Frank Marino's "stratified" SG's.
bubbagomez Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 I've got a bridge phat cat if you're interested, pm me.
zorrow Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 Bump! Still looking! I've got a bridge phat cat if you're interested, pm me. I am interested on a set more than a single pup. If someone else has a neck Phat Cat for sale, I'm interested on yours, yeah.
tomteriffic Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Wow, I'd completely forgotten about this. check out Pete Biltoft's Vintage Vibes. I had a set in black and they were some sweet sounding pickups. Unfortunatley, the buyer of the guitar they were in insisted that they go with it.Check 'em out here scroll down a ways.
