His stuff with Ozzy never did anything for me, but I'll admit all I heard were the radio hits. That first Badlands album is a ripper, though.

I love Badlands...especially their first album...the vocals rule! LOL! (yes, I am a terminal cheeseball).

They had a cover of "Fire and Rain" which is the only way I can listen to that tune.

Rumblin' Train from the first album..is everything a rock band should be...full of fire and cocky swagger...bombastic...sweaty, sexy and fun!

I liked his Ozzy stuff (Ultimate Sin had I think every licktrick ever dreamed up), but his Badlands stuff rules. That tone - superstrat guitar through cranked Marshall and as dry as the Sahara - is perfect for the moods of those discs.

Ray Gillian was one of the best I have ever seen. I saw him sing with Black Sabbath on the Seventh Star tour. He has amazing...one of the best live vocal performances I have ever seen. He did all the great tunes...the Ozzy stuff...the Dio stuff..and the new (at the time) stuff from Glenn Hughes, all without flinching. That's an impressive range of styles. Any time I am asked about great live vocals..I mention that concert...people just look at me like I am nuts. I am not....he was one of the best I have ever seen. I also saw Badlands and he was amazing that night as well. Damn shame. ;)

From the Savatage site...

: Who is Ray Gillian?

A: Actually spelled Ray Gillen, he was the singer of the group Badlands that featured Ozzy Osbourne’s ex-guitarist Jake E Lee. Paul knew Ray and brought him to sing on vocal duet at the end of "Strange Wings." The powerful section was actually recorded in only one take! Prior to Badlands, Ray sang briefly with Black Sabbath on their "Seventh Star" tour and worked on the Phenomenon II soundtrack with Glen Hughes. Ray died tragically of complications due to AIDS in 1993. Some of Ray’s last recording can be found on a CD called Sun Red Sun witch also features Chris Caffery one track as well.

Man, where have I been? I didn't even know he had passed away. I thought he was a good singer. I only have the 1st Badlands cd. Is the Voodoo Highway one as good?

Badlands third unreleased CD "Dusk" goes more bluesy and less metal than the first two, but still rocks super hard in spots. The more I listen to Jake, the more I admire the guy. My brother has some of his solo albums, they are wierd but the playing is insane.

I'm with Poe on Ray Gillan. I had the opportunity to see Badlands on their first tour from front row in a smaller club. What a smokin' band!! Ray Gillan was brilliant that night. I was also fortunate enough to get a hold of some bootlegs of the live Sabbath shows with Ray Gillan as well as some stuff he did with Rick Derringer. Incredible!! He sang Ozzy Sabbath songs better than Ozzy and could do a hell of a Sabbath era Dio impression while still retaining his own identity. And the version of "Rock and Roll" he did with Derringer, even the most avid Robert Plant fan would be thinking to himself...damn, this guy can sing!!! Hell, Ray even sang on a Lynch Mob demo track that I don't think ever got publically released, the guy was one of the best singers of that era. It was too bad he passed away because I loved seeing a guitar player as great as Jake and a vocalist as awesome as Ray in the same band. Plus, they were both really cool guys when I met them. Glad to hear Jake is back though!

Badlands is one of my very favorite bands. Jake's playing was fantastic, and the whole stripped down sound of the band was perfect hard rock. I loved all 3 albums, Badlands, Voodoo Highway and Dusk.

Ray Gillen was the perfect complement to Jake's playing and key to the band's powerful and expressive sound. I hear nothing cheesy in his vocals. In fact, he's one of my favorite singers.

I never thought Jake's work with Ozzy approached the quality of what he did with Badlands. From what I've heard of the new Jake CD, it sounds like we're in for some more Badlands-esque hard rockin' groove. I can't wait. ;)
