GuitFiddle Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Hello Hamerheads, At a local shop live two used but near mint Hamer Standards. One is a Korina Standard (two-piece body) with gold hardware, dots, abalone logo, no bindings....just lightweight and beautiful. The other is clearly a custom model, mahogany neck/body, deep purple quilt top, full binding, crowns, chrome harware....also achingly beautiful. So, here's the sticking point - each is tagged at $2600. From Hamer experience (and as a former owner of several), that seems astronomical. But, they aren't exactly run-of-the-mill Standards, either. I can't find any completed Ebay auctions, or anything else on the web for that matter, alluding to what these might be worth. Can anyone here clue me in on approximate worth of these guitars? I'm interested in them but the price seems a bit proud...Thank you!
cmatthes Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Prices actually don't sound too off to me. The Korina one seems a bit high, but I'd expect that to be close to $2k-$2,200. The purple one is probably right where it should be. Caveat here is that those are prices that I would say are fair for a dealer - they might go for less direct from the seller. Will they negotiate down? Worth a shot.
Steve Haynie Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Do you know what years the guitars were made? The original run of 100 korina Standards was done in 1995. The list price was under $2000. They were later priced at $3500, so a price in the $2000 range is still good on a more recent korina Standard. You mention an inlaid logo, so that guitar was definitely recent and more expensive than normal.Flame top Standards were cheaper in the 90's, but in recent years they sell at a discount for well over $2000. It may be that the Standards hanging in the shop are priced according to what someone paid in the past couple of years.
Feynman Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Also, quilt is a premium upcharge, isn't it? From my recent Standard window shopping, $2600 for a fully bound quilt top Standard is probably reasonable.
Zoner Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 The shop you speak of can be notoriously hard to haggle with, or amazingly motivated to move inventory depending on factors unknown to the buying public. I imagine they could be had much cheaper, but it might take hitting them up at just the right moment.
