jwhitcomb3 Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 My mother plays guitar for a living. She's a music therapist, playing guitar and singing with patients in nursing homes and hospitals. Unfortunately, she's developed tendinitis in her left shoulder and her guitar strap for her ovation acoustic is putting too much stress on her shoulder. Are there any kinds of straps or harnesses that would distribute the weight differently to relieve her sore left shoulder?Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks,Jonathan
LostArt Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 try the yamaha air cell guitar strap. it may help!
ET_KenW Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Something like this may work too.http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pla...trap?sku=360634
Rhys Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Planet Waves make a strap called the "Squid" which is meant to be really good for people with shoulder problems. It's got a series of pads on it that distribute the weight of the guitar over a wider area for more comfort.
JohnnyB Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I have several nice multi-layer Levy's, a padded leather D'Addario, and have tried some ultra-padded wide straps designed for heavy basses. But the best I've ever used for shoulder comfort with a heavy guitar is a simple, soft, wide (3-1/2" to 4") leather strap. It's soft like glove or garment leather, but unpadded, so it totally conforms to the contours of your shoulder. At the same time, it's wide so it spreads the weight over a wide area. I got mine at a Musicians Friend before their retail outlets were bought and converted by Guitar Center. I use it on the 1998 Phantom Custom, which is solid and heavy. This strap makes the weight a non-factor. It looks like Musicians Friend still has it, or one very similar.
guymandude Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I have the Yamaha Air Cell strap and while it works great I think it's meant for nu metal. It is the longest strap ever made. I have to tie up the ends to get it short enough for me to use.
Willie G. Moseley Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 The wider the better: Simple weight distribution. Had a total left achromionectomy in '01; raw edge now hurts like hell in cold weather and if a chunky bass is hanging on it, but it's better than the alternative (rotator cuff surgery).
jwhitcomb3 Posted April 17, 2008 Author Posted April 17, 2008 Thanks! I've passed on your suggestions.-Jonathan
