Looking at the flame on the Hit Parader mag, you may be right: It looks like it's the same guitar. With the multiple angles on the added pics, i was wrong on the knob placement: those look fine.

I remember hearing something about Jol not making single pup guitars without a pickguard? I'm assuming it's to better hide the neck joint, which it looks like we can see on some of the old magazine pics.

If you can, pop the pickguard off and take another pic?

Maybe KK pulled the pickguard off after he got it. I sure don't see any screw holes in those pics, though...

Ah... i ramble. Sorry to repeat myself - but either way: KILLER guitar!!

I don't really want to take the guard off at this point because some of the screw heads are almost stripped, and one of the screws is at a slight angle and I wouldn't want to strip the hole. I notice there is one less hole than in the production KK's, the hole on the top edge nearest the pickup.

If anyone still has doubt about the flame matching, I'll get a better pic of the hit parader (when I find one) and do a side-by side. It is unequivocally the same guitar. I hope to find out the deal with the pickguard someday.

Ok, dense over here- So the "KK Downing" was a production model called by that name? or is it a Vector-

My brain is confused

It was a custom made instrument for K.K. Downing. He asked that his name be on the headstock instead of a Hamer logo.

Only my pieced together observations, Vector was a Hamer model, KK was brought onboard by Hamer and as posted chllenged to have his name on the 'stock bigger than Hamer, got his challenge, became an endorsee, had a KK model based off the Vector and based on this guitar, and he had a few other custom Vs made. I think I would go so far as to say this could be considered the Prototype to the KK model. His having the only all Maple neck that I have seen. I'm sure there might be a few out there with Maple fretboards but I bet the majority have Rosewood boards. As I said only my observations.

This is not the prototype KKV-that was a four digit instrument IIRC. This is one of the ones made for him according to the serial number though. No question in my mind. My guess is that the guard was just added at a later point. I'd be very surprised if it WASN'T the one from the HIT PARADER mag. I have a copy of that around somewhere too. Just too much junk and not enough time to find it all!

Cool. I was just trying to connect dots anyway for the guy that was a lil confused in post #29.
