San Antonio, What to do?

Well my big vacation romp through the Appalachians has been deep-sixed due to a change in project start dates at work.

As a result I'm scaling back to a 4 day weekend trip out to San Antonio and back. Current plan is to arrive in San Antonio Friday morning and spend the day with CB Jr at Six Flags Fiesta. We're gonna spend Friday and Saturday nights downtown on the riverwalk. Saturday I plan to check out the riverwalk and whatever is around there. Any cool guitar stores to see while I'm out that way? Must eat ats? We're gonna pull out Sunday morning and head back to Houston for a day full of ass chapping at Astroworld, then the drive home Monday after a pawn shop/music store run.

Put on a nice dress and piss on it just like Ozzy, just kidding.

You MUST drive over to the Acapulco Drive In (not too far from the Alamo IIRC) and take a picture of it for me. Stay for a bite, the food aint too bad and the "waiter"(if he's still alive) is amusing. The place is a dive but charminglly so.

Stike, the Drive In is a food establishment, or a movie drive in?

There's always "El Mercado", the big ole mexican market if you like browsing around for mexican trinkets or need a new hat or pair of boots.

CB Jr might get a kick out of the Ripleys believe it or not museum that is over across from the Alamo, and there is some sort of haunted house or something next to it too.

It's a little Mexican food joint. It was in it's prior life some type of burger/fry/shake/carhop hang out. I was there back in 99 in the roadie days and we wound up eating there. Best I could tell it was owned/operated by an old couple. She cooked( on a cheap little Kenmore range while the original kitchen equipment gathered dust ) and he sat in a chair drinking tallboy Buds between table visits. I was kinda hungover that day so my recolection of whether the food was any good or not is spotty but I'd eat there again. Even if you pass if you could snap a pic or two for me I'd appreciate it, if it's still there and if you can find it of course. The only other place I ate at in SA was some Waffle House type o' dump.

I'm definitely gonna hit the Market Square "El Mercado". I like looking at stuff. I'm gonna at least swing by Acapulco Drive In for a pic too.

CB,

I'm taking the family to SA this weekend, we're staying Saturday and Sunday nite cause we're going to Six Flags Fiesta TXS Saturday and Sunday. Wanna hook up sometime for a nice Mexican dinner on the river walk?

CB,

Check out the Buckhorn Saloon. Buckhorn Saloon It's campy but in a good way - your boy will love it. They actually have a nice gift shop with quality goods instead of the usual tourist crap. A boat ride along Riverwalk is a must.

Lived in SA for 15 years until last year when I moved out here to Phoenix.

Guitar/music stores

1. Krazy Kat music on St. Mary's street. Ask for Bobdog and tell him that I sent you. (Chuck Zeigler) Krazy Kats is a used store with a very interesting selection of eclectic & vintage gear.

2. Spacetone Music. Just off of Broadway in Alamo Heights. Ask for Jason. (The owner) Spacetone is another used store with some really cool vintage gear.

3. Century Music. North on Hwy 281 exit Thousand Oaks and take the turnaround. Ask for Bear. Century carrys mostly new gear with some of the higher end Fenders and Hamers.

4. Hermes Music on San Pedro just off of North loop 410. Ask for Roland, Glenn or Sonny Boy.

Hermes is the largest store and they have the best prices in the country. (I'm not kidding!!)

Mexican Food:

1. For breakfast go to Panchitos on McCullough in Olmos Park. They have the best Chilaquiles in SA.

2. For lunch, go downtown to La Margaritas, which is at the Mercado.

3. For dinner, you must check out La Fogata, which is on Vance Jackson, just off of I-10.

Entertainment:

Obviously, the Riverwalk is a great place and yes, the river boat ride is a must for all first timers.

If you want something a little more down to earth, drive north about 30 minutes to Gruene, which is near New Braunfels. Gruene (pronounced Green) Hall is one of Texas' oldest dance halls and has some of the best music around. The town of Gruene is a very nice historic town which your whole family will enjoy visiting.

That's my .02 worth.
