atquinn Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 If so, how are you liking the Stetsbar? It looks ugly as hell, but does it work well (in terms of holding pitch, not getting in the way of the pickup selector, etc...)? I'm thinking it might be a nice solution for someone like me who likes set-neck Hamers, likes trems, and likes buying and selling guitars . -Austin
hardheartedbill Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Steve put one on a R9, I thought it sucked, it's very heavy, and just plain fugly , did'nt work any better than a bigsby IMO, I would avoid

The Bigsby just has an acceptable "cool factor" earned over many decades. Many people want them and buy guitars with them (I have been guilty of this), but anyone that has spent time with one will eventually end up wishing it weren't there. If this thing works "no better than a Bigsby" and can be installed and later removed without any drilling or mods, then it sure makes perfect sense. It sure looks a lot cooler than the Bowen Handle, that's for sure! Yikes! That IS ugly!

I don't care about heavy and ugly (I mean, hell, Floyd Roses are heavy and ugly and they rock), but if it doesn't work any better than a Bigsby, that's not necessarily good news. I guess the question is, do you think Bigsbys suck or not? (I've never used one enough to form an opinion.) -Austin
hardheartedbill Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 for the record, I'm no Bigsby lover, I call it the handheld chorus pedal LOL. I would just but a used Mexican strat , you'll get as good a trem w/ a guitar around it
discountsounds Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 I call it the handheld chorus pedal Just wondering what you meant by that comment. Do you find that the Bigsby affects the tone of the guitar in a chorus-y kind of way??? I have a Bigsby on my Newport - don't really care for it (the Bigsby that is), but I didn't think it really affected my tone in that kind of dramatic way. Of course, I've never played my Newport without the Bigsby!
hardheartedbill Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 I mean that I think the bigsby's strong suit is the worbble effect, hang onto it and pulse, sort of like a chorus pedal
Scottcrud Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 At least my Floyd is black, same as my guitar, so it's more stealth like and less of a " Look, I'm freakin UGLY"!

tomteriffic Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 The look of it reminds me strongly of the original Doc Kauffman vibratos that were on some early Ricks and Joe Maphis guitars. Particularly the arm.
kurtsstuff Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 just looking at it tells me it's a bad design...when using the trem it looks like the strings will be sliding back and forth against the saddles unless it's the whole thing that moves? but I guess the upside to that would be that you get the "pick scrape" against the strings effect???..
hardheartedbill Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 the whole "bridge" part moves, it's like 2 pieces of metal that slide ontop of each other, one is the base and the other holds the TOM bridge and saddle part, it is a very smooth action like the bigsby

That's exactly the way a Bigsby works.
Scottcrud Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 anybody remember the Washburn Wonderbars? Another bulky, ugly trem, but as I recall They worked!
kizanski Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 anybody remember the Washburn Wonderbars? Another bulky, ugly trem, but as I recall They worked! ...but you still had to drill.I think this one has it over all of them in that department.
Lockbody Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 anybody remember the Washburn Wonderbars? Another bulky, ugly trem, but as I recall They worked! I had one on my RD Artist. Very smooth action, but everybody in the band called that guitar "The Battleship".
epigram154 Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 A buddy of mine had a Studio with a bigsby and custom made graphtech roller bridge. It was amazing how well it stayed in tune despite Neil Young type destruction. It cost him an arm and a leg. I have a bigsby on my Newport and I like it but just because its shinny!
