ajoso Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I had an idea: as someone who has searched this forum for pricing info and past sales of various guitar models, it's really frustrating to find posts where people have either a) erased all price & model info and replaced it with "SOLD" or b ) simply pasted a link to Craiglist. (I'm guilty of that one.)Might I suggest that it would be useful to all future buyers if we keep the sale info up as historical information.Mods - feel free to pin this if you think it's a good idea.

atquinn Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I think it's rather pointless as the market is constantly in flux and the posted price isn't always the same as the sales price. But that's just me.-Austin

Bennyboy-UK Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I think it's a good idea - I'm always looking to keep my perceptions up to date ref potential Market values of different stuff. And as a source of info I think it's valid - even in context with the above point. It's all information after all, and would be potentially helpful to some people - if like me you don't know if an average condition 78 sunbust, flame topped with a headstock break and 1 replaced pickup for 500 quid is about right or not?Anyway I'd not dimiss the idea as being without any value.B

BubbaVO Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I agree that the market is always in a flux, but understanding a guitar's market price range at a given point in time is a good idea. The thing I question is whether deals on this board represent "the market". I know I've bought guitars off of our bretheren that are definitely below FMV. Perhaps the information would be useful in establishing the lower end of the price range?
Bennyboy-UK Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Mind you... Although the info is of interest to me ... I don't think it should be made policy and enforced as part of the board 'rules' to disclose fnal deal prices.BI agree that the market is always in a flux, but understanding a guitar's market price range at a given point in time is a good idea. Better than average deals within the HFC community plus knowledge of specific desirabilities - eg. Cali madness.Good point, that.B

It shouldn't be mandatory, but final prices are a good guide regardless of where you find them--I never consider them as written in stone, but as a reference only. Back in my pre-internet days (about 15 years ago), my best source for trying to figure out market value was the ads in Vintage Guitar Magazine (NOT the price guide), for trying to figure out a decent average price for something that I was interested in. With the way the economy is right now, it's almost like the pre-internet days--it all depends on finding a motivated buyer or a desperate seller if you want to get ahead either way.

Phantom Custom. If we're talking about Strats, that's a whole different story.
