Price check - '76 Fender Super Twin (NR)

Question

Posted

In good original condition with original speakers, no pedal. Was owned by an older gent that played 4-5 gigs a year in a small jazz combo, so don't think it's been abused. Not my bag, really (too heavy, too much headroom), but have been offered this one privately through an estate for what seems like small dollars. Would like to know the approx market range for these as I'm unfamiliar with this model.

Thanks in advance.

Is $250-$300 "small dollars" for this amp? Surely must be one or two Fender guys out there familiar with this amp.

Judging by the response, this is obviously a poor question for the HFC forum.

Bought the darn thing anyhow, as it seemed to good to pass up at that price. Have my chiropractor and audiologist on speed dial now, as this thing has back trouble and tinnitus written all over it!

If nothing else, my son could use it for an interesting bass head project. That or we could swap it for something. Hmmm... perhaps the Navy needs a new anchor for one of their aircraft carriers?...

Thank God this one has casters - would be a be-otch lugging this thing around without 'em. Speakers are heavy - big magnets to handle that power. The power transformer is the most massive I've seen in a guitar amp - that is one serious piece of iron!!

Was thinking to myself "My son's young - he'll have plenty of opportunity to slip a disc or two if he decides to gig with this thing". Then I plugged into it and started playing "Moondance". Think he's gonna have a hard time prying this outta the music room now!

Had an epiphany last night! Put my '62 SilverTone/Kay 1410 (single DeArmond cheese-grater pu) through a BYOC Reverb pedal into the Super Twin with the output running into a small pine cab loaded with a '50's vintage Quam alnico 10''. Started playing some greasy, bluesy slide licks at a nice low volume (didn't wanna blow the little sucker with 180 tube watts on tap) and sweet Mother of God - sounded like the voice of heaven itself! The little alnico speaker was the key to the tone - compresses and breaks up so much easier/nicer than the stock ceramic hi-power speakers - very creamy, smooth glissando with the slide. Sure I ran a big risk - but man, was it worth it!

My son definitely isn't getting this thing now (or anybody else for that matter!) - he can find his own darn amp!

Thanks for the reference. Bought it, lovin' it - one of the best pieces of kit I ever got for $250 (paid more than that for pedals, fer cryin' out loud). Slaving it from my Phaez head's line out for the wet, clean side of my rig's signal chain - aces for that. As long as I don't have to carry it around, I'm a happy camper...

not to hijack Gtone...now we Get Randy "phaez"and his gadgets/amps involved I have 3 of his amps, his fuggin 2 12ax7 preamp kills. Now when nobodys home Im gonna slam the front end of the super twin with the phaez pre amp.FUN

Ray - Randy's stuff can be pretty cool, huh? He sent me a dual 6V6 medium gain "Princeton on Steroids" that I didn't really care for (too stringy/sinewy), so I sent it back. He replaced it with the higher gain Daisycutter dual EL84 and I was blown off my feet. That little bugger has tone for days and for $400 with head cab included, I felt like I was robbing the guy!

Gigged it a fair bit since then, 90% of the time slaving a second amp with the wet/dry setup, and everywhere people ask about the amp and compliment it's tone. In lower gain modes, can dial in some nice Edge/blues/CSNY, med gain covers ZZTop/AC/DC/Kossoff/Zep, a little more delivers Brian May, Big Sugar, EVH. To handle R&B, jazz and funk, I just dial down the DaisyCutter master and increase the mix on the clean side.

Now, if Randy could just add a switchable tube rectifier for a little bit more relaxed tube sag when you wanted it, the darn thing would be pure tonal bliss! Cheers...
