Apple has been slowly going away from Firewire. My macbook air doesn't have FW. Then again it doesn't have an optical disk drive either.

What makes you say that?

The point of the macbook air is to keep it light by leaving things out - like a drive and multiple ports.

Every production mac - laptop and desktop - has firewire.

If anything, it appears that mac is going for faster firewire - the old macbook used FW400 and ALL the new ones use FW800...

Macbooks no longer have the Firewire ports - you have to go up to the Pro for that.

Do you think that this indicates a move away from firewire or the macbook?

Apple does have a habit of being a leader when it comes to moving into and out of technologies.

Good point about the Air not having firewire due to portability/weight concerns. I'd add that in researching whether or not to buy the Air I sure came across a lot of articles that asked the same question.

This is as good a discussion as I've seen:

Apple is moving away from firewire slowly, though those of us who manage many apple computers hate to see that happen. Target disk mode via firewire is an awesome bit of technology to fix a computer or save data from a harddrive without having to remove the drive.
