Is there a Doctor in the house?

So, I'm making some coleslaw the other night and am way off the mark with the chopping (Nice job on the sharpening, dear!), resulting in a portion of the tip 'o the left ring finger being almost sheared off. It isn't a major deal at all, no stitches needed or anything, just wondering how to deal with a semi-attached disc of meat that keeps bleeding every time I try and fret.

(I know - don't fret. Duh. Take the week off, let 'er heal.) But.......

2 questions though; would you guys rip off the departed portion and let a patch grow in or is that asking for more pain and trouble?

Additionally, I have practice scheduled for tonight, and I don't want Ted to steal the spotlight doing ALL the solos, so what do you think of some super-glue and an extra Shiner Bock or 2 for the rehearsal?

I will spare you pics of course. :(

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and;

Z is in no way is attempting to solicit real medical advice. Any advice given will be taken with gratitude and a grain of salt and no harm will come to any who offer same. Really silly advice may garner a snide comment but no legal action will be taken as a result of any measures adopted as a result of this query, regardless of the outcome.

Get to the ER or to a doc ASAP and get it looked over. You may need some stitches. Gluing it shut does not address potential infection. If an infection sets in, you could be risking the finger, your hand, or part of your arm. Then you'll really have trouble playing.

I cut off the tip of my index finger at age 14 or so. Just a small bit of skin. Before I started playing. It mostly doesn't affect playing but it still hurts like crazy if I boink it on the tip. More so than my other fingers.

Emergency Room or your doctor's office ASAP ...and don't beat on it until it's healed. I did that to my left thumb also when I was about 14. I just taped it down. It is still visible and feels like a loose tooth. I did not see a doctor. Don't repeat my idiot mistake.

Yikes! I really don't think it is all that serious though, man - it's literally just barely into the meat and more of a nuisance than a medical emergency (no offense to the responsible adults in the room). I appreciate the concern, but really, what are they likely to do at the E.R.? My money is on Super Glue. :(

I'm thinking I'll try the glue and make a guard of some sort - kinda go "Iommi" on it if you will.

Maybe use this opportunity to work on my bottlenecking...........Hartwell!!!

Just read the replies again....Fuck! OK, I'm not going to play on it a clean the heck out of it r right now. I REALLY don't want to go to the Doc, and I'll be less flippant about it for sure- I promise. Hmm, no gear to tote!

If Robbie gets pissed because I'm just sitting there drinking a cold one and singing the occasional background part, I'm blaming you guys........I'm considering this my HFC Doctor's note!

Hey, he can be a scary dude!

If you're going the Super Glue route, go to a drug store and get New Skin. It's like super glue plus a disinfectant. What you don't want to do is glue the flap shut with a lot of bacteria inside. The New Skin kills the germs (up to a point) and glues it shut. I use it to treat cracked fingertips from dry atmosphere (indoors during winter).

But if you have diabetes, or if there's any chance that you might, get to a doctor and get it treated right. I knew a woman with diabetes who sliced her finger on an orange juice can lid. The infection dogged her like a bloodhound. She had to get her finger amputated, then the fingers next to it, then the hand, and eventually was amputated halfway up her forearm. Lest you think this is an urban legend, she was my sister's best friend and I worked with her after she was down to half an arm. Granted, she had a bad case of type 1 diabetes.

Since we don't know how bad the cut is, how old you are, or what your circulation and blood sugar levels are, we don't know your prospects for fully recovering with a DIY regimen, especially if you intend to continue to re-aggravate and reinfect the wound by sliding it up and down on a steel string the gauge of a cheese slicer.

Probably too late, but post some pics showing the wound pulled apart. If the finger is cut at an angle (skived) it will look worse than it actually is. Cuts that are 90 degrees to the surface always heal the best. A deep cut in the fingertip will generally have some fat showing, and that needs to be sutured. Can't be certain without seeing but it sounds that if you use a good antiseptic to cleanse the wound, like betadine, rinse it well and apply a tight bandage you should be fine. I use glue on myself when necessary and am too cheap to buy the medical stuff. I usually go for Krazy Glue. Ever since I watched a neurosurgeon patch a leaky dura membrane with super glue I have not been to paticular, and no it was not any special stuff, just ordinary super glue and it was not sterile. He said he does it all the time.
